How this compares to other environmental data sites
Most weather and air quality sites force you through a location search, store your query history, and load your page with ads. This tool is lean: input coordinates or use GPS, see the data, save locations locally.

How it works
- 1
Pick a location
Click Use my location for GPS, or type latitude and longitude for any point on Earth. Save locations you check often with one click.
- 2
See live environment data
Weather, air quality, UV index, sun position and moon phase load for that exact point. Updates are live from Open-Meteo.
- 3
Save or re-check
Save the location for next time. Every saved location is stored in your browser only. No account, no sync, no tracking of your interest.
Everything you get for free
Any point on Earth
Use your device GPS with one click, or type in any latitude and longitude. Great for checking conditions at a remote site, a family member city, or a place you are about to travel to.
Air quality with European AQI
See PM2.5, PM10, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide, plus the European AQI and the US AQI for reference. Colour coded so you can see at a glance whether the air is healthy.
UV index with burn time
The UV card shows the current UV index, a colour coded severity label, and an estimated burn time based on the skin type you select. Uses the standard Fitzpatrick-based multipliers.
Sun position in real time
Current solar elevation and azimuth are calculated locally from your coordinates and the current time. Sunrise, sunset, day length, solar noon and golden hour windows are all shown.
Moon phase calculated offline
Current moon phase and approximate illumination are calculated from the standard astronomical formula, no API call needed. Shows the phase name and an emoji for quick reference.
7 day forecast strip
Weather code, high and low temperature, expected precipitation, peak UV and maximum wind for the next seven days, with the current day highlighted.
Saved locations stored locally
Keep a list of places you check often. Saved locations are stored in your browser local storage only. They never leave your device and there is no account to sync.
Free, no sign-up, no ads on the data
No account, no email, no login. The page may show site-wide ads, but there are no ads inside the data cards and no third party tracking of which locations you look up.
What people use it for
Check air quality before a run
Look up the local AQI and PM2.5 before heading out. If the air is poor, shift the run indoors or wait for the wind to change. Especially useful in cities with seasonal smog.
Plan a photo shoot
Check sunrise, sunset, golden hour and the current sun position. Plan the shot for the exact minute the light is best for the composition you want.
Sun protection decisions
See the UV index and the burn time for your skin type. Decide whether you need sunscreen, a hat, or to move an outdoor event indoors.
Monitor a remote property
Check current conditions at a rental, a farm or a holiday home you are not at. Save the location once and come back to it any time.
Travel prep
Look up the weather, UV and air quality at your destination before you pack. Helps decide between warm and cool clothes, sunscreen and whether to bring a mask.
Astronomy planning
Check the moon phase and illumination to plan a stargazing session. A new moon night with clear skies gives the best chance of seeing the Milky Way.
Questions people ask
Where does the data come from?
Weather and forecast data come from Open-Meteo, a free open source weather API. Air quality and UV data come from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) through the Open-Meteo air quality API. Both are free, no API key required, and used by many public weather sites.
Do you store my location?
No. The coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo only to fetch the data, and only your browser does that. ToolDeck has no server in the loop. Saved locations are stored in your browser local storage and never leave your device.
Why does the app ask for location permission?
Browsers require explicit permission before a page can read your GPS coordinates. You can decline and still use the manual latitude and longitude inputs instead. Nothing is read until you click Use my location.
What is European AQI?
The European AQI is an air quality index defined by the European Environment Agency. It is calculated from the concentration of five pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide) and reported on a scale of 0 to 100 and above. Values below 20 are good, 20 to 40 fair, 40 to 60 moderate, 60 to 80 poor, 80 to 100 very poor, and above 100 extremely poor.
What does PM2.5 mean?
PM2.5 is particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less. These particles are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Long-term exposure is linked to cardiovascular and respiratory disease. Typical good outdoor PM2.5 is under 12 µg/m³. Above 35 µg/m³ is a concern, above 55 is unhealthy.
How accurate is the burn time estimate?
It is a rough guide, not medical advice. The formula uses the UV index and multiplies by a factor based on the Fitzpatrick skin type (fair, medium, dark). Real burn time depends on altitude, reflection from snow or water, medication, and other personal factors. Use it as a hint, not as a substitute for sunscreen.
What is the difference between UV index and UV index clear sky?
The UV index shown is the current forecast for your location, which accounts for cloud cover. The clear-sky value shows what the UV would be with no clouds. Comparing the two tells you how much the clouds are currently blocking.
Is the sun position accurate?
The solar elevation and azimuth are calculated locally using the standard Simplified Solar Position algorithm. Accuracy is within about one degree for typical locations, which is far more than enough for photography, gardening and planning.
How is the moon phase calculated?
The moon phase uses the standard astronomical formula based on the number of days since the last known new moon on 6 January 2000. It is accurate to within a few hours of the true phase for the current date.
Does it work offline?
The page loads offline after the first visit, but fetching new data requires an internet connection. The moon phase, sun position and burn time can all be computed offline because they are calculated locally, but the weather and air quality require a live API call.
Can I see historical data?
Not in this tool. Open-Meteo supports historical data and the tool could be extended to show it. For now, the focus is on live conditions and the seven day forecast.
Why does some air quality data show "not available"?
The CAMS air quality model covers the entire globe but with different resolution in different regions. Some remote ocean and polar locations have no coverage. If the API cannot return a value for your location, the field shows "not available" rather than a false number.
Can I use this on mobile?
Yes. The GPS button is designed for phones: tap once and the browser asks for permission. Saved locations work on mobile browsers and persist in local storage. The layout adapts to small screens.
Do you show pollen data?
Not yet. Pollen data is available in the Open-Meteo air quality API for some regions in Europe. Adding it is a future improvement. For now, focus on the air quality values that are available everywhere.
Is there an API I can use directly?
Yes, from Open-Meteo. The endpoints this tool calls are documented at open-meteo.com and air-quality-api.open-meteo.com. They are free for non-commercial use with a generous rate limit.
Does the tool work with coordinates below sea level or above 8000 m?
Yes. Any latitude from -90 to 90 and longitude from -180 to 180 is valid. The forecast model handles most altitudes; very high mountain peaks may be interpolated from the nearest grid point, so treat the numbers as approximate for extreme altitudes.
Your location is used, not tracked
Coordinates are sent from your browser directly to Open-Meteo to fetch the data. ToolDeck has no backend and does not see, log or store which locations you look up. Saved locations live in your browser local storage and never leave your device. Open the browser network tab while using the tool and confirm the only requests are to open-meteo.com.
