What is a HEIC file?
In short: a HEIC file is the photo format iPhones use by default. HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It keeps photos at about half the size of a JPG at similar quality, but many devices and websites cannot open it, so people convert HEIC to JPG.
Apple switched the iPhone camera to HEIC with iOS 11 in 2017, and it has been the default since. HEIC is Apple’s use of the HEIF image standard together with the HEVC codec. It also supports features JPG does not, such as storing several images in one file, which is how Live Photos and depth information are kept.
The downside appears the moment you leave Apple’s world. A friend on Windows, an old Android phone, a job application form or a print shop may not be able to open the file. JPG, in contrast, has been supported by practically every device and program for decades. A HEIC to JPG converter closes that gap in seconds.
How to convert HEIC to JPG
Three steps, about 30 seconds, and nothing to install. It works the same on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac.
- 1
Select your HEIC files
Drag up to 20 HEIC photos from your iPhone, Mac or PC onto the page, or click to browse. Files stay on your device.
- 2
Check the JPG settings
JPG is already selected as the output. Pick a quality (90% is a good default) and optionally resize the photos.
- 3
Download your JPG files
Save each JPG on its own, or download all of them together as one ZIP file.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
HEIC is great for saving storage on your phone, but sharing is where it causes trouble. Windows, many Android apps, email clients, older editing software and a large number of websites still expect JPG. Converting HEIC to JPG is the fastest way to make an iPhone photo work for anyone, on any device.
| Feature | HEIC | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Opens on Windows | Needs extra codecs | Yes, everywhere |
| Opens on Android | Android 10+, some apps only | Yes, every app |
| Opens in email and chat apps | Often fails or is converted | Yes |
| Opens in Photoshop and editors | Recent versions only | Yes, all versions |
| Accepted by websites and forms | Often rejected | Yes |
| Print shops | Rarely accepted | Yes |
| File size | Roughly half of JPG | Larger |
| Quality at the same size | Slightly better | Good |
Open HEIC on Windows, Mac and Android
Whether you need to convert depends on where the photo is going. This table shows what each device does with HEIC and what to do about it.
| Device or place | HEIC support | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 and 11 | Windows needs the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and HEVC video support for some files. Many PCs do not have them. | Convert to JPG once and the photo opens in every Windows app with no extensions. |
| Mac | macOS opens HEIC natively in Preview and Photos. | Convert only when you need to upload or send the photo to someone who cannot open HEIC. |
| Android | Android 10 and newer can open HEIC in many apps, but plenty of older apps and websites still reject it. | Convert to JPG for WhatsApp, forms, marketplaces and older phones. |
| iPhone and iPad | iOS shows HEIC natively. Sharing from the Photos app can convert automatically, but not in every app. | Convert in bulk here when you need many JPG files at once. |
| Web browsers and websites | Most browsers and upload forms do not accept HEIC. | A JPG uploads without errors on almost every site. |
| Printers and photo shops | Many print services only read JPG. | Convert before you order prints. |
How to make your iPhone save JPG instead of HEIC
If you share photos often, you can change the camera format so new photos are saved as JPG. This only affects photos you take from now on.
- 1Open Settings on your iPhone and tap Camera.
- 2Tap Formats.
- 3Choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG instead of HEIC.
- 4For photos you already took, convert them here. The setting only affects new photos.
- 5Optional: in Settings > Photos, under Transfer to Mac or PC, choose Automatic so the iPhone converts photos when you copy them to a computer.
Menu names can differ slightly between iOS versions.
HEIC vs JPG vs PNG
All three store images, but they are built for different jobs. For photos you want to share, JPG is the safe choice. Choose PNG only when you need a lossless copy.
| Feature | HEIC | JPG | PNG |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Saving space on iPhone | Sharing and uploading everywhere | Graphics, screenshots, lossless copies |
| Compression | Lossy (efficient) | Lossy | Lossless |
| Typical file size | Smallest | Medium | Largest |
| Compatibility | Limited outside Apple | Universal | Universal |
| Transparency | Supported | Not supported | Supported |
| Good choice for photos you will share | No | Yes | Only if you need lossless |
JPG quality settings explained
The quality slider trades file size against detail. Use this guide to pick a value for the job.
| Quality | Best for | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 95 to 100% | Printing, archiving and photos you will edit again | Largest JPG files |
| 90% | Everyday default. Looks the same as the original in nearly all cases | Good balance of size and quality |
| 80 to 85% | Email, messaging and social media | Noticeably smaller files |
| 60 to 75% | Quick previews or very small uploads | Some softness may appear on close inspection |
When you need to convert HEIC to JPG
Send iPhone photos to Windows
Windows cannot always open HEIC without extra codecs. Convert to JPG once and the photo opens everywhere.
Many Android apps and older phones still reject HEIC. JPG works in every messaging app.
Upload to any website
Job portals, marketplaces, government forms and email providers often only accept JPG.
Print at a photo shop
Print services accept JPG. Many cannot read HEIC at all, so convert before you go.
Edit in Photoshop or GIMP
Older editing software cannot open HEIC. JPG opens in every version.
Make a PDF or a video
PDF and video tools accept JPG more reliably. Convert first, then build your PDF or slideshow.
ToolDeck vs other ways to convert HEIC
There are four common ways to deal with HEIC photos. This table compares them on privacy, cost and convenience.
| Feature | ToolDeck | Upload-based online converters | Windows HEIF extensions | iPhone Most Compatible setting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Where photos are processed | In your browser, on your device | On the provider’s servers | On your PC | On your iPhone |
| Photos you already have | Yes | Yes | Opens them, does not convert | No. Only new photos |
| Batch conversion | Up to 20 at once | Varies, often limited | No | Not applicable |
| Cost and account | Free, no sign-up | Free tier with limits, or paid | Free extension, HEVC may cost | Free |
| Watermark | None | Sometimes | None | None |
| Privacy risk | Low: photos never leave your device | Higher: a copy is uploaded | Low | Low |
| Works on any device | Yes, in a browser | Yes | Windows only | iPhone only |
The other columns describe common patterns, not any single product. Features, limits and pricing vary, so check a provider’s current terms.
Troubleshooting HEIC to JPG problems
Most issues come from very large batches, edited files or confusion between a photo and a Live Photo. Find your symptom below.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The file will not convert | The file is not a real HEIC (for example a renamed file), is damaged, or is over 25 MB. | Open it on your phone to check it works, export it again, or reduce its size first. |
| The photo looks rotated | Orientation data is read from the original file. | Make sure you upload the original HEIC. If a photo was edited by another app, rotate it after converting. |
| Colors look slightly different | iPhone photos can use a wider color range than standard JPG. | Colors may shift a little. Convert at 90% or higher and compare on a calibrated screen if color is critical. |
| A Live Photo gives one still image | Live Photos contain a short video as well as a still frame. | The JPG is the still frame. Export the motion part from your phone if you need the video. |
| The page is slow with many photos | Large batches use a lot of browser memory. | Close other tabs, convert in groups of 10 to 12, or choose a smaller output size. |
| The date and location are missing | Metadata is not carried over during conversion. | This is deliberate for privacy. Keep the original HEIC if you need the date and location. |
| Downloads do not appear on iPhone | Safari may ask where to save files. | Tap the download button in the address bar and choose Save to Files or Photos. |

HEIC to JPG questions
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11, released in 2017. It stores photos at roughly half the size of a JPG at similar visible quality, which saves space on your phone. The catch is that many Windows PCs, Android apps, websites and printers cannot open it.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG for free?
Drag your HEIC photos onto the converter at the top of this page, keep JPG as the output, choose a quality (90% is a good default) and download your files. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
JPG opens on virtually every phone, computer, browser, editor and printer. Converting HEIC to JPG is the simplest way to share an iPhone photo with anyone, upload it to a website, or use it in software that does not support HEIC.
Will converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
A small amount, which is usually invisible. Both formats use lossy compression. At 90% quality most people cannot tell the converted JPG from the original. If you need zero loss, convert to PNG instead using the HEIC to PNG tool.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Yes. You can add up to 20 photos at a time, each up to 25 MB. Download them one by one or all together as a ZIP file.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Your photos are opened, converted and saved by your browser on your own device. They are never uploaded to ToolDeck, which makes the tool suitable for private photos.
Does the converter remove photo metadata and location?
Yes. Details such as GPS location and camera information are not carried into the converted JPG. For most people this is a privacy benefit. If you need to keep that information, keep your original HEIC file as well.
Does the photo orientation stay correct?
Yes. The tool reads the orientation stored in the HEIC file, so the JPG appears the same way up as it does on your iPhone.
How do I open HEIC files on Windows without converting?
Install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Some files also need HEVC video support. Many people find it faster to convert the photos to JPG, which then open in every Windows app with no extra installs.
Can Android open HEIC photos?
Android 10 and newer can open HEIC in many apps, but older versions and many apps and websites cannot. Converting to JPG makes the photo work everywhere.
How do I make my iPhone take JPG photos instead of HEIC?
Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos you have already taken stay in HEIC until you convert them.
What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF?
HEIF is the container standard. HEIC is the version Apple uses with the HEVC codec for photos. For everyday use, a HEIC file is a HEIF photo, and a converter that opens HEIC handles the files your iPhone saves.
What is the best quality setting for JPG?
90% is a strong default and looks the same as the original in almost every case. Use 95% for photos you plan to print. Go lower only when you need the smallest possible file for email or messaging.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG instead?
Yes. Use the HEIC to PNG converter on ToolDeck. PNG is lossless and keeps every pixel, but the files are much larger than JPG.
Can I convert HEIC to JPG on my phone?
Yes. This page works in the browser on iPhone and Android, so you can convert without installing an app. Large batches work better on a computer.
Is there a limit on how often I can use it?
No. There is no daily limit, no sign-up and no charge. Use it as often as you like.
Your photos stay on your device
