Image editor FAQ: questions people ask

Quick answers about cropping, resizing, filters, privacy and file formats.

How do I edit an image online for free?

Drop your photo onto the free ToolDeck Image Editor above. Crop it, rotate or straighten it, adjust brightness, contrast and colour, or tap a filter. When you are happy, open the Export tab and click Download. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.

Is this image editor really free?

Yes. It is 100% free with no hidden fees, no premium tiers, no daily limits and no watermarks on your downloaded images.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can start editing immediately without signing up, giving an email address or entering any personal details.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The editor runs entirely in your web browser using the HTML5 canvas. Your photo is read from your device, edited in the browser tab and saved back to your device. You can open your browser network tab to confirm that no image data is sent out.

What image formats can I open and save?

You can open JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF images, depending on what your browser supports. You can export as JPG, PNG or WebP. HEIC photos from iPhones are not supported by most browsers, so convert them first with our HEIC to JPG tool.

How do I crop a photo to a specific aspect ratio?

Open the Crop tab, choose a ratio such as 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 or 9:16, drag the box or its corner handles to frame your subject, then click Apply crop. Choose Free to crop to any shape, or Swap to flip between landscape and portrait.

What size should I crop for Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn?

Use 1:1 for square Instagram posts and profile pictures, 4:5 for portrait Instagram posts, 9:16 for Stories, Reels and TikTok, and 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails. These presets are all available in the Crop tab.

How do I rotate or straighten a crooked photo?

Open the Rotate tab. Use Rotate left or Rotate right to turn the image in 90 degree steps, or drag the Straighten slider to fix a tilted horizon by a few degrees. The image is zoomed automatically so no empty corners appear.

How do I flip or mirror an image?

In the Rotate tab, click Flip horizontal to mirror left to right, or Flip vertical to mirror top to bottom. The button stays highlighted while a flip is active, and you can click it again to undo it.

How do I make a photo brighter or fix contrast?

Open the Adjust tab and move the Brightness slider to the right for a lighter photo or to the left for a darker one. The Contrast slider changes the difference between dark and light areas. Saturation, warmth and hue are right below for colour fixes.

How do I turn a photo black and white?

Open the Filters tab and click Black & White or Noir, or press the B&W button in the Adjust tab. You can then raise contrast to make it more dramatic, or add a vignette for a classic look.

How do I resize an image to exact dimensions?

Open the Export tab and type a new width or height in pixels, or use the quick buttons for 75%, 50%, 25%, 1920px, 1080px or 800px. The aspect ratio is kept automatically so the photo is never stretched.

Which export format should I choose: JPG, PNG or WebP?

Choose JPG for photos and the widest compatibility, WebP for smaller files on websites, and PNG when you need lossless quality or transparency. For JPG and WebP you can lower the quality slider to reduce file size.

Will editing reduce my image quality?

Edits are applied at the full resolution of your photo. If you export as PNG there is no quality loss. JPG and WebP are lossy formats, so we default to 92% quality, which looks virtually identical to the original while keeping the file smaller.

Can I undo my edits or compare with the original?

Yes. Click Undo and Redo, or press Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z (Cmd on Mac). Hold the Hold to compare button to temporarily see the original colours, and use Reset all to go back to your starting image.

Does it remove EXIF data and location information?

Yes. Because the image is redrawn and re-encoded in your browser, the exported file does not carry over the original EXIF metadata, including GPS location and camera details. The photo is still saved in the correct orientation.

Does it work on mobile phones and tablets?

Yes. The editor is responsive and works in modern mobile browsers such as Safari on iPhone and iPad and Chrome on Android. Very large photos are scaled down slightly on phones to protect the browser from running out of memory.

Can I edit several images at once?

Not yet. The editor works on one image at a time. To process many photos, use our Image Compressor or Image Resizer tools, or a desktop app like Adobe Lightroom for large batches.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no upload limit because nothing is uploaded. Very large images are limited by your device memory. Photos above roughly 30 megapixels (16 megapixels on iPhone and iPad) are scaled down automatically when opened.

Is this a good alternative to Photoshop?

For quick everyday fixes such as cropping, straightening, colour correction, filters and resizing, yes. It is faster to open and needs no installation. It does not offer layers, selections or advanced retouching, so professional compositing still needs a full desktop editor.

ToolDeck vs desktop editors and other online tools

Many online editors upload your image to a server or ask you to sign up. This one runs locally in your browser. Desktop editors are more powerful but need installation and a learning curve.

Your image never leaves your device

There is no upload step and no server-side handling. The image is read from your device, edited inside an HTML5 canvas in your browser tab and saved back to your device. Nothing about the file, its name or its contents is sent to any server. Open your browser network tab while using the tool and you can confirm that no outbound request carries your image. Exported files are re-encoded, so original EXIF metadata such as GPS location is not included.
