What people use this voice recorder for
Interviews and field notes
Record an interview or a quick note without sending the audio to a cloud recorder. Keep in mind that the file still sits on your device, so protect that device and your downloads.
Podcasters and creators
Record intros, outros or voiceovers, trim the silence and export WAV for your editor or MP3 for sharing.
Students and notes
Record a lecture or a voice memo, use the waveform to cut the parts you do not need, and save the rest as MP3.
Musicians
Capture a song idea or riff quickly. Export WAV to keep the recording uncompressed.
What the recorder includes
Live waveform display
Watch the waveform move while you record, so you can tell right away whether your microphone is picking up sound.
Visual trimming
Drag the handles to cut the start and end of your audio. Use the preview button to hear the trimmed selection before you export.
Export WAV or MP3
WAV is uncompressed and gives the best quality for editing. MP3 (128 kbps) makes a much smaller file that is easier to share.
Processed in your browser
Your recording is handled by browser audio APIs on your device. The tool does not send your voice to a server.
No account required
Open the page, record and download. There is no sign-up and no email step.
Works on phones
You can record voice memos in a mobile browser such as Safari on iOS or Chrome on Android, with no app to install. Support depends on your browser version.
What works well and what to keep in mind
A short, honest look at what this recorder is good for and where you will need another tool.
Works well for
- Voice memos, interview notes, lecture recordings and quick voiceovers
- Trimming silence or mistakes from the start and end of a take
- Getting a WAV for editing or a small MP3 for sharing
- Recording on a laptop or phone without installing anything
Keep in mind
- It records the microphone only. Browsers restrict system audio capture, so it will not record a video playing on your device.
- You can trim the start and end, but this is not a multi-track editor and does not remove noise.
- Long recordings use device memory. A WAV is much larger than an MP3, so keep long sessions short or export MP3.
- Download your file before you close or refresh the tab.
- Browser support differs. Use a recent version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
Browser recorder vs typical cloud recorders
Some online recorders upload your audio to a server or ask you to sign up. This one processes audio in your browser. It is also simpler, so it does less than a full editor.
| Feature | Typical cloud recorders | ToolDeck |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Varies: free tier, subscription or paywall | Free |
| Where audio is processed | Often uploaded to a cloud server | In your browser, on your device |
| Sign-up | Often an email or account | None |
| Watermarks and limits | Often restricted on free plans | None that we add |
| Installation | Sometimes needs an app | Runs in the browser |
| Advanced editing | Some offer multi-track editing | Trim only |

Questions people ask
Is this online audio recorder free?
Yes. ToolDeck does not charge for this tool, ask for an email or require an account.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. Recording, trimming and export all run in your browser on your device, and the tool does not send your audio to a server. You can confirm this by watching your browser network tab while you use it.
Can I use it for confidential interviews?
It avoids uploading your audio to a cloud recorder, which removes one privacy risk. The file is still stored on your device, so make sure the device, your downloads folder and any backups are secure, and get consent from the people you record where required.
How do I record my voice online without installing anything?
Open this page, click Start Recording, allow microphone access in your browser, speak, then stop. You can trim the recording and download it as WAV or MP3.
How do I trim a voice recording online?
After you stop recording, drag the start and end handles on the waveform to select the part you want to keep. Press Play to preview it, then export. The handles cut the beginning and end of the clip.
Should I export WAV or MP3?
WAV is uncompressed, so it keeps the full quality of the recording and suits editing in a DAW or video editor. MP3 compresses the audio into a much smaller file, which is easier to email or post. If you plan to edit further, choose WAV.
How big will my file be?
An MP3 at 128 kbps is about 58 MB per hour. A WAV depends on the sample rate and channels. As a rough guide, 16-bit stereo at 44.1 kHz is about 600 MB per hour, and mono is about half that.
What is the maximum recording length?
There is no fixed time limit set by the page. The practical limit is your device memory and browser, and WAV files use much more memory than MP3. For long sessions, record in shorter parts.
Can I record system audio, such as a video playing on my computer?
No. This tool records your microphone. Browsers restrict system audio capture, and the options vary between Chrome, Safari and Firefox.
Does it work on iPhone and iPad?
It can, on recent versions of iOS and iPadOS where Safari supports MediaRecorder. If recording does not start, update iOS and check that Safari has microphone permission.
Why is my microphone not working?
Check that you clicked Allow when the browser asked for microphone access, that the correct input device is selected in your system settings, and that no other app is using the microphone. In the browser address bar, open the site settings to review the microphone permission.
How do I remove background noise?
This tool captures the audio as recorded and does not remove noise. You can try the ToolDeck Audio Noise Gate on your file, or use a dedicated audio editor for stronger noise reduction.
Why does the MP3 export take a few seconds?
MP3 encoding runs in JavaScript inside your browser, so the time depends on the length of the recording and the speed of your device. WAV export is usually quicker because there is no compression step.
