Schema types and the rich results they power
Eleven types, with what each one produces in search and which fields are required.
| Type | Rich result | Required fields |
|---|---|---|

| BlogPosting | Same as Article | headline, image, datePublished, author |
| Product | Price, availability, star rating | name, image, offers |
| FAQPage | Expandable FAQ list under the snippet | mainEntity with at least one Question |
| LocalBusiness | Knowledge panel, map snippet | name, address, telephone |
| Organization | Knowledge panel, logo | name, url, logo |
| Person | Author or founder panel | name |
| Event | Date strip, venue, tickets | name, startDate, location |
| Recipe | Recipe card with image, time, rating | name, image, recipeIngredient, recipeInstructions |
| BreadcrumbList | Breadcrumb trail under the URL in search | at least two ListItems with name and item |
| WebSite | Sitelinks search box | name, url, potentialAction |
Six rules for schema that Google actually shows
Schema is easy to add and easy to get wrong. These rules are what separates a rich result from a warning in Search Console.
| Rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Only mark up what is on the page | Google penalises or ignores schema that describes hidden content. If the FAQ is not visible, do not mark it up |
| One main type per page | A product page should not also claim to be an Article. Pick the type that matches the page purpose |
| Use absolute URLs | Relative paths like /image.png do not work. Always include https:// and the full domain |
| Images must be reachable | Google fetches the image URL. If it 404s or is blocked by robots.txt, the rich result will not appear |
| ISO 8601 dates and times | datePublished accepts 2026-01-15. startDate accepts 2026-01-15T18:00:00Z. Local time without a timezone may be ignored |
| Test before you ship | Use the Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator on a live URL, not localhost |

How it works
- 1
Pick a schema type
Choose from Article, Product, FAQ, Local Business and eight more. The form changes to show only the fields that type needs.
- 2
Fill in the fields
Only fill in what is actually on the page. Optional fields can be left empty and are omitted from the output.
- 3
Copy the script tag
Copy the ready-to-paste script tag into the head of your page, or download it as a .jsonld file. Test it with Google Rich Results Test.
Everything you get for free
Eleven schema types
Article, BlogPosting, Product, FAQPage, LocalBusiness, Organization, Person, Event, Recipe, BreadcrumbList and WebSite. One page covers almost every rich result Google supports.
Live JSON-LD preview
The output updates on every keystroke. No Generate button, no server round trip. You see exactly what will go into the page.
Dynamic FAQ and breadcrumb lists
Add as many questions or breadcrumb steps as you like. Each entry becomes a proper mainEntity or itemListElement with the correct position numbering.
Recipe time conversion
Enter prep and cook time in minutes and the tool writes the correct ISO 8601 duration (PT20M) plus a computed totalTime. No manual format juggling.
Automatic nested structure
Author becomes a Person inside the Article. Publisher becomes an Organization with an ImageObject logo. Address becomes a PostalAddress inside LocalBusiness. Every nested type is generated for you.
Copy the full script tag
One click copies the whole thing including the <script type="application/ld+json"> wrapper, ready to paste straight into your page head.
Download as .jsonld
Or download it as a .jsonld file if your build pipeline reads it from disk instead of the page template.
Zero upload, zero logging
Everything runs in JavaScript on your device. There is no server side generation, no logging of your input and no analytics on the content itself.
What people use it for
Getting article rich results
Google shows author, date and sometimes images in article search results when the Article schema is correct. Add it once and it works on every post.
Showing star ratings for products
Product schema with price, availability and AggregateRating is what produces the stars, price and In stock badge in search results.
Getting FAQ rich results
FAQ schema on a page with genuinely useful questions can produce an expandable result under the snippet. Same questions and answers must be visible on the page.
Local SEO for a shop
LocalBusiness schema with a full PostalAddress and telephone is what powers the knowledge panel and the map snippet for a local shop or clinic.
Recipe cards on Google
Recipe schema with cook time, rating and an image is what makes the recipe card appear with the photo, time and rating in a search result.
Event listings
Event schema with a start date and a Place is what produces the date strip on Google search results for concerts, conferences and meetups.
Questions people ask
What is schema markup?
Schema markup is structured data added to a page in a format that search engines understand. It describes what the page is about: an article, a product, a recipe, an event, and so on. Google uses it to produce rich results such as star ratings, prices, FAQ lists and breadcrumb trails in search.
Is this schema generator free?
Yes. Every schema type and every field is free to use with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. ToolDeck may show ads to pay for hosting, but they never lock a feature.
Is my content uploaded to a server?
No. Every field is stored in your browser as you type, and the JSON-LD is generated in JavaScript on your device. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is logged and there is no server side generation.
Which schema format should I use: JSON-LD, Microdata or RDFa?
Google recommends JSON-LD. It is the least intrusive because it does not touch the visible HTML, it is easy to generate programmatically and it is easy to remove. This tool only generates JSON-LD.
Where do I put the script tag?
Inside the head of the page, or immediately before the closing body tag. Both work. Google reads it either way. If you use a CMS, there is usually a place to paste custom head code.
Do I need a separate script tag per schema type?
No. Multiple schema types can be combined in a single script tag by wrapping them in an array, or by using the @graph property. The simplest approach is one script tag per type, which is what this tool generates.
How do I test schema markup?
Use Google Rich Results Test with the live URL (not localhost) to see which rich results the page is eligible for. For a broader check, use the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org. Both are free.
Why is my rich result not showing?
The most common causes are: the schema describes content that is not visible on the page, the image URL is broken or blocked by robots.txt, dates are not in ISO 8601 format, required fields are missing, or the page is not yet indexed. Fix the schema, request a re-index, and wait a few weeks.
Can I add multiple FAQ questions at once?
Yes. Click Add question to add another row. Each one becomes a separate Question in the mainEntity array with its own acceptedAnswer. There is no limit on the number you can add.
Does FAQ schema still show rich results in Google?
Google reduced FAQ rich results for most sites in 2023. They still appear for authoritative health and government sites, and occasionally for other sites. The schema is still worth adding because it helps search engines understand the content and can feed other surfaces like AI answers.
What image size should I use for schema?
For Article and Product schema, use at least 1200 by 630 pixels. For Recipe, Google recommends larger images. For Organization logo, use a square or near-square image at least 112 by 112 pixels. Images must be reachable URLs, not data URIs.
Do I need to mark up every page?
No. Add schema where it earns a rich result or helps search engines understand the content. Product pages, articles, recipes, events, FAQs and local business pages are the highest value. A generic About page usually does not need schema.
Can I combine schema with the Meta Tag Generator?
Yes. Meta tags and schema markup are complementary. The Meta Tag Generator handles title, description, Open Graph and Twitter Card. The Schema Markup Generator handles JSON-LD. Both are needed for a well-optimised page.
Which browsers are supported?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and mobile. Everything uses standard web APIs and no browser specific features.
Everything you type stays in your browser
The schema markup generator runs entirely in JavaScript on your device. There is no server side generation, no logging of your input and no analytics on the content itself. You can confirm this by watching your browser network tab while using the tool. See why ToolDeck is different.
