Spreadsheet formats this tool reads
Four formats cover almost every spreadsheet in the wild. The same parser handles all of them.
| Format | In use since | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| XLSX | Excel 2007 | Modern default. XML-based zip, handles millions of rows |
| XLS | Excel 97 to 2003 | Legacy binary. Still common in older organisations |
| ODS | LibreOffice, OpenOffice | OpenDocument spreadsheet. XML-based zip |
| CSV | Forever | Plain text, one table per file, no formatting |
What CSV keeps and what it drops
CSV is a plain text format. Knowing what it loses before you convert saves a surprise later.
| Feature | In CSV | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cell formatting and colours | No | CSV is plain text. Formatting is lost on export |
| Formulas | No | The computed value is exported, not the formula |
| Multiple sheets in one file | No | CSV holds one table. Use the "download all sheets" button to get one CSV per sheet |
| Charts and images | No | Only cell values are exported |
| Merged cells | Partial | The value appears in the top-left cell. The merged range is not preserved |
| Unicode and emoji | Yes | UTF-8 with BOM so Excel opens them correctly |
| Very large sheets | Yes | Rows are streamed in memory. Practical limit is your device memory |
Why this is the best free Excel to CSV converter

How it works
- 1
Drop your spreadsheet
Drag an .xlsx, .xls, .ods or .csv file onto the box, or click to choose one. Nothing is uploaded, everything happens on your device.
- 2
Pick a sheet and options
If the workbook has multiple sheets, click the one you want. Choose the delimiter, toggle trim and drop empty rows, and preview the result live.
- 3
Download one CSV or all sheets
With one sheet, one file downloads. With multiple, use Download all sheets to get one CSV per sheet, named after the workbook and the sheet.
Everything you get for free
Every sheet is read
An Excel workbook can contain many sheets. The tool lists them all and lets you switch between them. The stats and preview update with the selected sheet.
Export one sheet or all of them
With a single sheet, one click downloads the CSV. With multiple sheets, one button downloads a separate CSV file per sheet, all named after the workbook and sheet.
Choice of delimiter
Comma is the default, but semicolon, tab and pipe are one click away. Useful when the spreadsheet was built for European Excel or a legacy system.
Trim, drop empty rows and skip headers
The output is cleaned on the fly. Trim removes leading and trailing spaces, drop empty rows removes blank lines, and skip header lets you export the data rows alone.
Real CSV quoting
Cells containing commas, quotes or line breaks are quoted and escaped correctly, so the resulting CSV is valid RFC 4180 and will import cleanly anywhere.
Live preview and stats
See the first 25 rows of the output before you download, plus a stats strip showing input rows, output rows and column count. No guessing.
Reads .xlsx, .xls, .ods and .csv
Modern Excel, legacy Excel, LibreOffice and plain CSV are all supported by the same parser. You can also use this tool to convert CSV to another delimiter.
Zero upload, zero logging
The file is read with the browser File API and parsed in JavaScript on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is stored, and there is no analytics on the content itself.
What people use it for
Exporting data for a database import
MySQL, PostgreSQL and most analytics tools load CSV, not XLSX. Convert the sheet, keep the header row, and import directly.
Preparing data for Python or R
pandas.read_csv and readr::read_csv expect CSV. Convert the workbook first, then load it into your notebook without a spreadsheet reader dependency.
Sharing with someone who has no Excel
CSV opens in every tool, on every operating system, without Excel installed. If the recipient just needs the data, CSV is the safest format.
Splitting a multi-sheet workbook
A quarterly report with one sheet per region is easier to process when each region is its own CSV. Export all sheets and every file lands named after its sheet.
Cleaning exports from a CRM
CRM exports often have trailing spaces, blank rows and a BOM. Convert with trim and drop empty rows on, and the resulting CSV imports without warnings.
Converting for a European locale
European Excel uses semicolons instead of commas. Convert the sheet, pick semicolon as the delimiter, and the file will open cleanly in Excel Germany, France or Spain.
Questions people ask
Is this Excel to CSV converter free?
Yes. Every option is free to use with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. ToolDeck may show ads to pay for hosting, but they never lock a feature.
Is my spreadsheet uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read with the browser File API and parsed in JavaScript on your device using SheetJS. Nothing is sent to ToolDeck or any third party, and you can confirm this by watching your browser network tab while using the tool.
Which file formats can I convert?
The tool reads .xlsx (modern Excel), .xls (legacy Excel), .ods (LibreOffice and OpenOffice) and .csv. You can also use it to convert CSV from one delimiter to another, for example comma to semicolon.
Does it read every sheet in the workbook?
Yes. When you load a file with multiple sheets, every sheet is parsed and listed as a clickable chip. The preview and stats follow the selected sheet. With multiple sheets you can also export every sheet at once as separate CSV files.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no server side limit because nothing is uploaded. The practical limit is your device memory. A few hundred thousand rows are usually fine on a modern laptop or desktop. Very large workbooks may be slow on older phones.
What happens to formulas, formatting and colours?
CSV is plain text, so anything that is not a cell value is lost. Formulas are replaced by their computed result. Colours, fonts, borders, charts and images are dropped. If you need to preserve formatting, keep the XLSX and use CSV only for the raw data.
Which delimiter should I choose?
Comma is the default in most of the world. Semicolon is standard in European Excel installations, especially Germany, France and Spain. Tab is common for database exports and TSV files. Pipe is used by some analytics and legacy systems.
Why does Excel show my CSV in one column?
That happens when the file uses a different delimiter than Excel expects. If your CSV uses commas but your regional settings expect semicolons, Excel will not split the columns. Re-convert with the other delimiter, or use the Data > From Text import wizard to specify the delimiter manually.
What does the BOM do?
The tool writes a UTF-8 byte order mark at the start of the file. It is a small marker that tells Excel the file is UTF-8, which is what makes accented characters and emoji open correctly. Other tools ignore it and it does not affect the data.
Can I keep the header row?
Yes. By default the header row is kept in the output. If you want the data rows alone, turn on the Skip first row toggle.
Can I remove blank rows?
Yes. The Drop empty rows toggle removes rows where every cell is blank. This is useful for exports that have a blank line between sections.
Can I trim leading and trailing spaces?
Yes. The Trim whitespace toggle removes spaces, tabs and non-breaking spaces from the start and end of every cell. This is the number one cause of duplicate values and broken imports.
Do you keep logs of my spreadsheet?
No. There is no server side component and no logging of your content. The only thing that ever leaves your browser is an anonymous page view, if you have analytics consent enabled.
Which browsers are supported?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and mobile. Everything uses standard web APIs and no browser specific features.
Your spreadsheet never leaves your browser
The file is read with the browser File API and parsed in JavaScript using SheetJS on your device. There is no server side conversion, no temporary storage and no analytics on the content itself. You can confirm this by watching the network tab while using the tool. Read how we keep it private.
