3GP Video Upscaler Free: Honest Limits, No Upload
3GP is the lowest-bitrate video format in common use, so this page is honest about what upscaling can and cannot do. If your browser can open the file, drop it in and keep the 1080p target. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored. If it cannot, this page shows you the one-line fix.
- QCIF, QVGA, CIF and VGA
- Output is MP4
- Batch up to 10 files
- No watermark
⚠️ Performance Warning
- If you don't have a graphics card (GPU), rendering will be slow. A GPU finishes short clips in seconds, a CPU can take several minutes.
- Please upload large files (close to 300 MB) one by one or in very small batches.
- Do not upscale 4K resolution for all 10 files at once. Please try batches of 2 to 5 files for 4K.
- Processing speed depends heavily on your GPU, CPU, and system memory.
- Mobile devices will be significantly slower than laptops and desktop PCs.
- 100% Secure
- No Upload
- No Storage
- No Sign-up
- Runs in Browser
- No Watermark
How do I upscale a 3GP video for free?
Drop the .3gp into the tool above and keep the 1080p target. If your browser can decode it, click Start Upscale and download the MP4: it runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded and no watermark is added. If the file is rejected, it uses H.263, which most browsers do not decode. Convert it to MP4 first with one ffmpeg command, then upscale. Either way, be realistic: a 176x144 clip to 1080p is a 7.5x step and the output will be bigger and smoother, not real 1080p.

What is 3GP, and what can it become?
3GP is a container format from 3GPP, designed for 3G feature phones. It typically holds H.263 video, or sometimes MPEG-4 Part 2, and AMR-NB audio at about 8 kHz mono. The bitrate is usually 100 to 400 kbps, compared with 1,000 to 2,000 kbps for a typical 480p MP4, and the frame rate is often 12 to 15 fps.
That is why 3GP is the hardest case for any upscaler. The limit is not only the pixel count. It is the bitrate, the frame rate and the audio, and upscaling can fix none of those. It can enlarge the frame and sharpen the edges that survive, which is still worth something. It cannot add the detail, the frames or the audio quality that were never recorded.
The three limits upscaling cannot fix
- Bitrate. A 3GP at 200 kbps has less real detail than a 480p MP4 at 1,500 kbps, even at the same resolution. Compression blocks get bigger, not cleaner.
- Frame rate. 12 to 15 fps stays 12 to 15 fps. The tool does not interpolate frames, so motion still looks choppy.
- Audio. AMR-NB is 8 kHz mono and sounds like a phone call. The tool re-attaches it unchanged; upscaling is a video operation only.
3GP resolutions and what they become at 1080p
In 1080p mode the short side of the frame is set to 1080 px and your aspect ratio is kept. Here is what the common 3GP sizes turn into.
| Your 3GP video | 1080p output | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 128x96 (SQCIF) | 1440x1080 | 11.25x, the largest jump here. The output is a much bigger blur, not real detail. |
| 176x144 (QCIF) | 1320x1080 | 7.5x, the most common old-phone size. Expect a soft, blocky result. |
| 320x240 (QVGA) | 1440x1080 | 4.5x. Early smartphone size and the best balance of size and remaining detail. |
| 352x288 (CIF) | 1320x1080 | 3.75x. Common on Symbian and early 3G phones. Watch for non-square pixels. |
| 640x480 (VGA) | 1440x1080 | 2.25x, the gentlest step and the best 3GP case. Bitrate is still low. |
Coming from 480p rather than 3GP? Use Upscale 480p to 1080p for the cleaner 2.25x case.
Which 3GP files upscale best
Resolution is only part of the story with 3GP. The bitrate and the frame rate decide how much is left to sharpen. Check your clip against this table before you start.
| 3GP type | Result | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 640x480 VGA 3GP (early smartphone) | Moderate | The gentlest step at 2.25x. Edges and text sharpen a little, but the low bitrate limits the gain. |
| 352x288 CIF 3GP | Limited | 3.75x. Faces and shapes become smoother, not sharper. The frame may also look stretched from non-square pixels. |
| 320x240 QVGA 3GP | Limited | 4.5x. The result is cleaner than a plain resize, but still clearly a small source. |
| 176x144 QCIF 3GP | Very limited | 7.5x. The output is a bigger blur. Do not expect readable text or faces. |
| 128x96 SQCIF 3GP | Very limited | 11.25x, the largest jump in the tool. Expect a big, soft file. |
| Any 3GP at 12-15 fps | Very limited | The frame rate is unchanged. Upscaling does not add frames, so motion still looks choppy. |
How to upscale a 3GP file in 3 steps
- 1
Check that your browser opens the file
Drop the .3gp into the tool. If a preview appears, your browser decodes it and you can continue. If it is rejected, the video codec is H.263, which most browsers do not decode. Convert to MP4 first; there is a section on that below.
- 2
Keep the 1080p target
1080p is the practical ceiling for 3GP. A 640x480 clip is a 2.25x step, a 176x144 clip is 7.5x. 4K is available but rarely worth it for a source this small.
- 3
Upscale and download
Click Start Upscale, wait for the progress bar, then download the MP4. The output is always MP4 or WebM, so upscaling a 3GP also converts it to a format every device can open.
If your browser will not open the .3gp file
Most 3GP video uses H.263, and some uses MPEG-4 Part 2. Modern browsers decode neither, so the file is rejected before upscaling can start. The fix is to convert it to MP4 first. You lose nothing in the conversion, because the pixels are copied as they are and no new detail is invented.
ffmpeg (command line)
ffmpeg -i input.3gp -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -c:a aac output.mp4Works on Windows, macOS and Linux. For a folder of clips, a short shell loop converts the whole batch.
HandBrake (graphical)
Open the .3gp, pick the Fast 1080p30 preset and press Start. You can queue several clips at once. Free and cross-platform.
If the clip looks stretched, set the display aspect in HandBrake's Dimensions tab before encoding.
Converting does not add detail. It only makes the file readable by your browser, so the upscale still starts from the same 100-400 kbps pixels. Use Upscale 480p to 1080p if your source is a standard 480p MP4 rather than a 3GP.
Is upscaling a 3GP video worth it?
Usually only for one reason: to get a single MP4 you can open anywhere. If you also want the best possible result, denoise the clip first with the Video Enhancer, trim it with the Video Trimmer, and shrink the result afterwards with the Video Compressor.
It is worth it when
- You have an old phone clip and the original 3GP file is the only copy you have
- The clip is 640x480 VGA or 320x240 QVGA, which are the gentlest steps
- You want one MP4 you can open on any device, not just a bigger copy of the same blur
It is not worth it when
- The clip is 176x144 or 128x96, because a 7.5x to 11.25x step mostly enlarges the blur
- You expect the frame rate or the audio to improve, because upscaling touches neither
- You want a sharp result, because a 3GP bitrate of 100-400 kbps never had the detail to sharpen

3GP video upscaler: questions people ask
Quick answers about browser support, codecs, resolution math, frame rate, audio and the honest limits of 3GP.
How do I upscale a 3GP video for free?
Drop the .3gp file into the tool above. If your browser can decode it, keep the 1080p target and click Start Upscale. The video is processed on your device, so nothing is uploaded and no watermark is added. If the browser rejects the file, convert it to MP4 first, then upscale the MP4.
Can a 3GP video ever look like real 1080p?
No. The most common 3GP size is 176x144, which is a 7.5x step to 1080p, and the bitrate is usually 100-400 kbps. Upscaling makes the frame bigger and the edges smoother, but it cannot add detail, frames or audio quality that were never recorded. Expect a clean-up, not a native-1080p look.
Why will my browser not open the .3gp file?
Most 3GP video uses H.263, and many files also use MPEG-4 Part 2. Modern browsers do not decode either codec natively, so the file is rejected before upscaling can start. Convert it to MP4 with ffmpeg or HandBrake first, then drop the MP4 into the tool.
What exactly is 3GP?
3GP is a container format from 3GPP, designed for 3G feature phones. It usually holds H.263 video and AMR-NB audio at about 8 kHz mono. Typical bitrate is 100-400 kbps, compared with 1,000-2,000 kbps for a normal 480p MP4, and the frame rate is often 12-15 fps. That combination, not just the pixel count, is why 3GP is the hardest case for any upscaler.
Which 3GP resolution upscales best?
640x480 VGA, because it is the gentlest step at 2.25x. A 176x144 QCIF clip is a 7.5x step and a 128x96 clip is 11.25x, and at those scales the output is mostly a bigger version of the original blur.
Is 176x144 to 1080p really 7.5x?
Yes. The tool scales by the short side, so 144 times 7.5 equals 1080, and the width goes to 1320. The aspect ratio of 176x144 is kept.
Does upscaling fix the low frame rate?
No. 3GP often runs at 12-15 fps, and the tool does not interpolate frames. The output keeps the same frame rate, so motion still looks choppy even after upscaling. Frame interpolation is a separate technique, and this tool does not do it.
Does it improve the audio?
No. 3GP audio is usually AMR-NB at 8 kHz mono, which sounds like a phone call. The tool re-attaches the original audio to the MP4 output, but it does not re-record or enhance it. Upscaling is a video operation only.
What about non-square pixels in 3GP?
Some 3GP files, especially 352x288 CIF, store non-square pixels for a 4:3 display. The tool treats them as square, so the result may look slightly stretched. If the shape matters, set the correct display aspect in your converter before upscaling.
Should I upscale 3GP to 4K?
It is possible but rarely worth it. 176x144 to 4K is a 15x step and about 225 times the pixels of the source, so the output is enormous and still blurry. 1080p is the practical ceiling for a 3GP source.
Does upscaling remove the blocky compression artifacts?
No. 3GP is compressed very hard, and those blocks get bigger along with the picture. The result looks smoother in some places and blockier in others, but it never becomes the clean image the blocks replaced. That is the honest ceiling for any 3GP upscale.
Can this tool convert 3GP to MP4?
Partly. It does not have a dedicated convert button, but if your browser can decode the 3GP, the upscale output is an MP4. So upscaling a decodable 3GP also gives you a universal MP4. If the browser cannot decode it, convert to MP4 first with ffmpeg or HandBrake, then upscale.
How do I convert 3GP to MP4 before upscaling?
With ffmpeg, run: ffmpeg -i input.3gp -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -c:a aac output.mp4. With HandBrake, open the .3gp, choose the Fast 1080p30 preset and start. Converting does not add detail; it only makes the file readable by your browser, so the upscale still starts from the same pixels.
How long does a 3GP upscale take?
Usually fast, because the source is tiny. On a device with WebGPU, most 3GP clips finish in seconds to a minute. Without WebGPU the tool falls back to the CPU, which is slower but still workable at these sizes.
What are the file limits?
Up to 300 MB and 3 minutes per file, and up to 10 files per batch. 3GP files are rarely near those limits, so you can usually batch several at once.
Can I batch upscale several 3GP files?
Yes. Up to 10 files per batch. The results download as one ZIP. Batch is the fastest way to rescue a folder of old phone clips.
Is my 3GP video uploaded anywhere?
No. The video is decoded, upscaled and re-encoded in your browser. Old phone clips can be personal, so this matters. Open your browser Network tab while it runs and you will see that no request carries your file.
