Instagram Image Sizes 2026: Feed, Stories, Reels & Ads
The complete guide to Instagram image sizes in 2026: feed posts, Reels, stories, carousels, profile pictures, and ads. Exact pixel dimensions and safe zones.
Instagram is one of the few platforms where uploading the "wrong size" image does not just look slightly off. It often crops away a third of your design. The app scales, crops and pads images differently for feed posts, stories, reels, carousels and ads. Get the size wrong and your carefully designed cover image becomes an awkward zoom of the middle third.

Each surface crops differently. Use the safe zone.
| Surface | Aspect | Pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Feed square | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 |
| Feed portrait (best engagement) | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 |
| Feed landscape | 1.91:1 | 1080 x 566 |
| Story / Reel | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 (safe 1080 x 1420) |
| Profile picture | 1:1 | 320 x 320 minimum |
| Reel cover | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 |
Feed post sizes
Feed is what most people mean by "Instagram post". There are three aspect ratios supported (square, portrait and landscape) and they all display in the same column.
| Format | Aspect ratio | Pixel size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 | The classic. Displays the full image. |
| Portrait | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 | Tallest feed image allowed. Takes up more vertical space in the feed, good for engagement. |
| Landscape | 1.91:1 | 1080 x 566 | Widest feed image allowed. Shows the least content in the feed grid. |
| Minimum size | n/a | 320 x 320 | Below this, Instagram upscales and the image looks soft. |
| Maximum size | n/a | 1440 x 1440 | Above this, Instagram downsizes to 1080. |
| Recommended upload | n/a | 1080 x 1080 minimum | Always upload at 1080 pixels wide. Instagram will compress but you keep resolution. |
Portrait (4:5) is the highest-engagement format. It takes up more of the feed, which means more attention per post. If you only remember one size from this guide, remember 1080 x 1350.
Story sizes
Stories are the most commonly mis-sized format. The 1080 x 1920 canvas is correct, but the app overlays UI on the top and bottom, so the "safe zone" is much smaller than the full canvas.
| Format | Aspect ratio | Pixel size | Safe zone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story (standard) | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 | 1080 x 1420 (centred) |
| Story (with link sticker) | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 | Safe zone shrinks. Keep key content in the middle 1080 x 1200. |
| Story (for feed preview) | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 | Profile preview crops to 1:1, so the middle 1080 x 1080 must work on its own. |
If you design a story with important content at the very top or bottom, it will be covered by the profile picture, timestamp, progress bar, reply box or swipe-up call-to-action. The 1080 x 1420 safe zone is the region that will always be visible.
Reels sizes
Reels are video-first, but the covers and thumbnails are images you need to think about.
| Element | Aspect ratio | Pixel size |
|---|---|---|
| Reel video | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 |
| Reel cover / thumbnail | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 (safe zone 1080 x 1420) |
| Reel in profile grid preview | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 (crop from the middle of the cover) |
| Reel in feed preview | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 (crop from the middle of the cover) |
The tricky part: a reel cover needs to work at 9:16, 4:5 and 1:1 because it appears on three different surfaces. Design the middle 1080 x 1080 first, then extend upward and downward. If the middle third does not work on its own, the profile grid will look wrong.
Carousel sizes
Carousels use the same dimensions as feed posts, but with a twist: every slide must be the same aspect ratio, or Instagram will crop them all to match the first slide.
- Choose one aspect ratio (usually 4:5) and use it for every slide.
- The first slide is what appears in the feed. Make it the strongest.
- Slides 2 to 10 are only visible after the user swipes, so they can be more detailed.
- Maximum 10 slides per carousel (up to 20 in some accounts).
Profile picture size
| Element | Aspect ratio | Pixel size |
|---|---|---|
| Profile picture | 1:1 | 320 x 320 minimum, 1080 x 1080 recommended |
| Display size in feed | 1:1 | 110 x 110 on mobile, 180 x 180 on desktop |
| Profile preview on top of stories | 1:1 | Circular crop of the square |
Profile pictures are cropped to a circle in the app, but stored as a square. Design with the circle in mind. Keep the subject centred, and do not put anything important in the corners, because they will be cut off.
Instagram ad sizes
| Ad format | Aspect ratio | Pixel size |
|---|---|---|
| Feed image ad | 1:1 or 4:5 | 1080 x 1080 or 1080 x 1350 |
| Story ad | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 (safe zone 1080 x 1420) |
| Reels ad | 9:16 | 1080 x 1920 |
| Carousel ad | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 per slide |
| Explore ad | 1:1 or 4:5 | Same as feed |
File format and quality
Two things matter for image quality:
- Use JPG for photos. Instagram recompresses everything you upload anyway, so uploading a JPG that is already compressed saves Instagram from re-compressing a PNG (which loses more quality).
- Use PNG only for designs with flat colors, text or transparency. Instagram will still recompress it, but PNG maintains sharp edges for text-heavy designs.
- Do not upload PNGs of photos. They are enormous and Instagram's re-compression will produce a worse result than if you had uploaded a JPG.
How to resize an image for Instagram
If you have an image and need it at a specific Instagram size, here is the workflow:
- Open the Image Resizer tool.
- Upload your photo. JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC.
- Enter the target dimensions. For example, 1080 x 1350 for a portrait feed post.
- Choose crop mode if you want to keep the aspect ratio, or stretch mode if you want to force the size.
- Download the resized image.
- Optional: run it through the Image Compressor to bring the file size under 200 KB. Instagram still compresses but a small file uploads faster.
Resize to any Instagram dimension in your browser. No upload.

Frequently asked
What is the best Instagram post size in 2026?
1080 x 1350 (4:5 portrait) is the highest-engagement size for feed posts because it takes up the most vertical space. 1080 x 1080 (1:1 square) is the classic format and works well for grid aesthetics. Landscape (1080 x 566) shows the least content in the feed and is best avoided unless the image demands it.
What size should Instagram stories be?
1080 x 1920. But the app overlays UI on the top and bottom, so the actual safe zone is 1080 x 1420 (centred). Keep anything important (logos, CTAs, text) inside that safe zone, or it will be covered by the profile picture, timestamp or reply box.
Should I upload PNG or JPG to Instagram?
JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with text or flat colours. Instagram recompresses everything you upload, so PNGs of photographs produce worse results than JPGs (double compression). For design-heavy content, PNG keeps text edges sharp before Instagram compresses.
Why does Instagram crop my images?
Instagram forces every feed image into one of three aspect ratios: 1:1, 4:5 or 1.91:1. If you upload an image with a different ratio, Instagram crops to the nearest supported ratio. Pre-crop your images to one of the supported sizes and you will not lose content.
What is the maximum image size Instagram accepts?
Instagram accepts images up to 1440 x 1440 for feed posts, but automatically resizes anything above 1080 pixels wide down to 1080. Upload at exactly 1080 pixels wide for best quality. Larger files are accepted but Instagram throws away the extra resolution.
What aspect ratio is Instagram Reels?
9:16, the same as stories. A 1080 x 1920 video fills the entire screen. If you upload a different ratio, Instagram adds blurred bars or crops the video to fill the 9:16 canvas.
What size should a carousel be?
The same as a feed post: 1080 x 1080 or 1080 x 1350. Every slide must be the same aspect ratio, or Instagram crops them all to match the first slide. Up to 10 slides per carousel (some accounts can post up to 20).
What size is an Instagram profile picture?
Upload at 1080 x 1080 for maximum quality. It displays as a circle cropped from the centre of the square, so keep your subject centred and do not put anything important in the corners.
