Why this is the best free countdown timer

How it works

  1. 1

Pick a preset or set your own

Tap 1, 5, 15 or 30 minutes for a quick timer, or set any hours/minutes/seconds. Give it a label so you can tell multiple timers apart.

  2. 2

Add more if you need them

Run as many timers as you want, side by side. Each one has its own start, pause, reset, loop and label. Everything persists across reloads.

  3. 3

Let it run and stay notified

The chime plays and a desktop notification fires when time is up. Loop mode auto-restarts for interval work. Copy a share link to send the same timer to someone else.

Everything you get for free

  • Multiple timers at once

Run as many countdown timers as you need, side by side. Cook three dishes at once, run a workout circuit with three work intervals, or track three exam sections with different time limits.

  • Presets and custom durations

One-tap presets for 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 30 minutes and 1 hour. Or set any combination of hours, minutes and seconds from 1 second up to 24 hours. Add as many timers as you want.

  • Custom labels per timer

Name each timer - "Tea", "Interval 1", "Section B", "Standup" - so at a glance you know what is ticking down. Labels are editable inline, even while the timer runs.

  • Loop / repeat mode

Turn on Loop for any timer and it restarts automatically when it hits zero. Perfect for interval training, HIIT circuits, repeated sprints, or a kids' "you have 10 minutes to clean" that keeps resetting.

  • Chime on finish

A two-note arpeggio plays when a timer ends, generated live with the Web Audio API - no sound files loaded, no downloads. Pitched higher for faster timers so you can tell short from long without looking.

  • Desktop notification

When a timer finishes, a native desktop notification fires so you can step away from the screen and still know when time is up. Opt-in, one permission prompt, works in the background.

  • Persists across reload

Close the tab, come back in an hour, and your timers are still there - paused but intact, labels and durations preserved. No account, no cloud, everything stays on your device.

  • Shareable timer links

Set a duration and label, then copy a URL that encodes them. Send it to a colleague and one click loads the same timer in their browser. Useful for meetings, classroom activities and remote workouts.

What people use it for

  • Cooking and baking

Tea in 3 minutes, pasta in 9, oven timer for 25. Run all three at once, each with its own label, and you stop juggling the phone in the kitchen.

  • Workout intervals

Set a 40-second work timer with Loop on, and a 20-second rest timer next to it with Loop on. HIIT circuits without needing a dedicated app.

  • Exam and study practice

Set a countdown for the real exam length and practice under the same time pressure. Or run one timer per section to enforce time discipline on multiple-choice tests.

  • Meetings and presentations

Standups, breakout rooms, presentation slots - set a shared timer, copy the link, drop it in the meeting chat. Everyone sees the same countdown.

  • Focus blocks and breaks

Set a 25 or 50-minute block with a short break timer, run both, and follow the rhythm. Simpler than the full Pomodoro tool if you do not need session tracking.

  • Classroom activities

Give students a visible 5-minute timer, or use a longer one for silent reading. Loop mode works for spelling rounds where each word gets a fixed window.

Questions people ask

How do I set a countdown timer?

Pick a preset (1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 30 minutes or 1 hour) and the timer appears ready to start. Or enter custom hours, minutes and seconds and click Add timer. Press Start and it counts down. The chime plays and a desktop notification fires when it hits zero.

Can I run more than one timer at the same time?

Yes, as many as you want. Each timer is independent - its own duration, label, loop setting and controls. Useful for cooking (tea, pasta, oven), workout intervals (work + rest), or managing multiple exam sections with different time limits.

Is my timer data stored anywhere?

Only on your device, in your browser's localStorage. Timers persist across reloads but never leave your browser. There is no account, no server, no sync. Clearing site data wipes everything.

What happens if I close the tab?

The timer continues to run as long as the browser tab stays open - even if you switch to another tab, the countdown keeps going and the chime will fire. If you fully close the tab, the timer is paused on your next visit, with the remaining time preserved. Just press Start to resume.

How does the chime work without an audio file?

A short two-note arpeggio is generated live with the Web Audio API - the browser's built-in sound synthesis. No MP3 or WAV is downloaded, no external asset requested, and you can turn it off entirely. The pitch is different for short and long timers so you can tell what ended without looking.

Do I need to allow notifications?

No. The chime plays regardless. Notifications are optional - the tool asks once via the browser's native permission prompt. If you enable them, a system notification fires when a timer finishes so you can step away from the screen and still know when time is up.

What is Loop mode for?

With Loop on, a timer restarts automatically each time it finishes. Ideal for interval training (30 seconds on, 30 seconds off - you do not want to reset manually), repeated classroom rounds, or a "5 more minutes" that keeps repeating. Turn it off to stop after the first cycle.

Can I share a timer with someone else?

Yes. Set a duration and label, then click Copy share link. The URL encodes both. Send it to a colleague or a class - when they open it, the tool loads with that duration and label preset and they just press Add timer. Useful for remote meetings and study groups.

What is the maximum timer duration?

The custom field allows up to 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds. Presets cover the common ranges (1 minute to 1 hour). If you need longer, use a date-based countdown tool - this one is designed for short sessions, not months-long waits.

Can I keep the timer running in the background?

Yes. Keep the tab open (even if you switch to another tab) and the countdown keeps running. The chime and desktop notification both fire in the background, so you do not need to stay on the page. The browser tab title also shows the countdown.

Is it accurate?

Yes. The tool calculates the exact end timestamp the moment you press Start and reads from the system clock on every animation frame - so it stays accurate even if the browser throttles background tabs, the UI thread is busy, or the computer sleeps briefly. The display updates once per second but the underlying math is continuous.

Is it free, and can I use it at work or school?

Completely free for personal, commercial and educational use. No sign-up, no email, no ads blocking the timer, no daily limit. Everything runs in your browser, so it is safe to use on a work laptop or shared classroom computer - nothing from this page touches your data.

Your timers stay on your device

Timer labels, durations and running state are stored in your browser's localStorage only. There is no account, no sync, no server. The chime is generated live with the Web Audio API - no audio file is ever downloaded. Clearing site data resets everything. Read how we keep it private.
