How do I upscale a screen recording for free?
Drop your recording into the tool above, keep the 4K target, click Start Upscale and download the 3840x2160 MP4. It runs on your own device, so nothing is uploaded and no watermark is added. Screen recordings upscale better than camera footage because text, icons and UI edges have a clear shape to sharpen: a 1080p recording to 4K is an exact 2x step, and a 720p Zoom share to 4K is an exact 3x step. It sharpens edges but cannot invent pixels, so unreadable text stays unreadable and motion blur stays blurry.

What your screen recording becomes at 4K
In 4K mode the short side of the frame is set to 2160 px and your aspect ratio is kept. Here is what the common screen-recording resolutions turn into.
| Your recording | 4K output | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1280x720 (Zoom, Meet, 720p share) | 3840x2160 | Exact 3x step. Also the most common source for "blurry Zoom recording" searches. |
| 1920x1080 (OBS, Loom, Snipping Tool) | 3840x2160 | Exact 2x step. The best case for screen recordings: clean text and UI edges. |
| 2560x1440 (QHD monitor) | 3840x2160 | Exact 1.5x step. Common on 27-inch monitors and 1440p game captures. |
| 2880x1800 (MacBook Pro 15" Retina) | 3456x2160 | 16:10 aspect ratio, kept. A 1.2x step, so the gain is smaller but still visible. |
| 3440x1440 (ultrawide QHD) | ~5120x2160 | Capped to the widest the tool allows. Any wider, the output is scaled to fit. |
| 3840x2160 (already 4K) | Unchanged | There is nothing to upscale. The tool never scales a video down. |
Already at 1080p? Use Upscale 1080p to 4K for the exact 2x case, or Upscale 720p to 1080p if you only need a Full HD deliverable from a 720p Zoom share.
How to upscale a screen recording in 3 steps
- 1
Drop your screen recording
Choose up to 10 files, or drag them onto the tool. Zoom, OBS, Loom, QuickTime, Snipping Tool and ScreenPal files all work. Nothing is uploaded.
- 2
Keep the 4K target
The 4K (3840x2160) target is already selected. A 1920x1080 recording becomes an exact 2x step, a 1280x720 Zoom share becomes an exact 3x step. Switch to 1080p if you want a smaller file.
- 3
Upscale and download
Click Start Upscale, wait for the progress bar, then download the 4K MP4. Several files come as one ZIP.
Which screen recordings upscale best
Screen content is the strongest case for upscaling because it is mostly text, edges and flat color. But not all screen recordings benefit. Check yours against this table before you start.
| Recording type | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UI walkthroughs and app demos | Excellent | Text, icons and panel edges come out crisper than a plain resize. This is the strongest use case. |
| Slide decks and webinars | Excellent | Flat colors and clean text scale well, even from a 720p share. |
| Code editors and terminal recordings | Excellent | Monospaced text and cursor edges sharpen noticeably at 4K. |
| Game captures (OBS, ShadowPlay) | Good | Works on clean renders. Heavy compression in the source reduces the gain. |
| Webcam + screen (picture-in-picture) | Moderate | The screen part sharpens. The webcam face gains little, because no new skin detail is added. |
| Low-bandwidth video-call shares | Limited | Zoom and Meet drop resolution hard on weak connections. There is not enough source detail to recover. |
| Heavy motion (scrolling, animated UI) | Limited | Motion blur and frame blur are enlarged along with the picture. The result looks bigger, not cleaner. |
Is upscaling a screen recording worth it?
Usually yes for tutorials and UI demos, and rarely yes for camera or heavy-motion content. Tutorials are often longer than 3 minutes, so trim long clips first with the Video Trimmer, and shrink the big 4K result afterwards with the Video Compressor.
It is worth it when
- Your recording is a tutorial, UI demo, code walkthrough or slide deck where text and edges matter
- You need a real 4K file for a YouTube upload, a 4K timeline or a client deliverable
- Your source is clean (OBS, Loom, Snipping Tool), not a low-bandwidth Zoom or Meet share
It is not worth it when
- The text was already unreadable in the source, because upscaling cannot invent readable letters
- The recording is mostly animated or scrolled, because motion blur gets enlarged, not fixed
- You just need a small file to email, since 4K output is several times bigger than 1080p
ToolDeck vs desktop and cloud screen-recording upscalers

Screen recording upscaler: questions people ask
Quick answers about recorders, text legibility, motion blur, file size, speed and limits.
How do I upscale a screen recording for free?
Open the tool above, drop your screen recording, keep the 4K target and click Start Upscale. The video is processed in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, no sign-up is needed and no watermark is added. When it finishes, download the 4K MP4.
Why do screen recordings upscale so well?
Screen recordings are mostly text, edges and flat color, which is exactly what the upscaler is tuned for. A 1080p recording to 4K is an exact 2x step, and a 720p Zoom or Meet share to 4K is an exact 3x step. Both are whole-number scales, so edges stay clean instead of going soft.
Will it make a blurry Zoom or Meet recording sharp?
Only partly. If the source was downscaled hard by Zoom or Meet on a weak connection, the pixels are simply gone and no upscaler can recover them. It will look cleaner than a plain resize, but the result still reflects what the call actually sent.
Will text that was unreadable become readable?
No. If a letter was illegible in the source, it stays illegible after upscaling, only larger and smoother. The tool sharpens edges that already exist, but it cannot invent the pixels that would make a blurry word readable.
Will it fix motion blur from scrolling?
No. If your cursor, scroll or animated UI was blurred in the source, upscaling enlarges that blur along with everything else. Trim the blurred part, or re-record at a higher frame rate, rather than expecting the upscaler to remove it.
What is the best target for screen recordings, 1080p or 4K?
4K for anything text-heavy: tutorials, code walkthroughs, UI demos, presentations. The gain in text and edge sharpness is visible. Use 1080p if you have a 720p source and only need a Full HD deliverable, because the file is smaller and processing is faster.
Can I upscale a 1440p screen recording?
Yes. 2560x1440 to 3840x2160 is an exact 1.5x step, the same case covered on the 1080p to 4K page. The gain is smaller than a 2x step, but text and edges still improve over a plain resize.
What about ultrawide 3440x1440 recordings?
They are capped to the widest the tool allows, roughly 5120 pixels wide, and the extra is scaled to fit. Ultrawide recordings that go beyond the cap come out slightly narrower than the raw 4K math suggests.
My tutorial is longer than 3 minutes. What do I do?
Trim it first with the Video Trimmer. The tool is limited to 3 minutes and 300 MB per file, which is a browser memory limit, not an arbitrary cutoff. Cut the tutorial into 2 to 3 minute segments, upscale each one, and re-join them in your editor if needed.
Does it keep the audio?
Yes for MP4 output, and you can switch it off with Keep audio. On the fast engines, audio is re-attached afterwards, and for files over 150 MB it may be skipped, in which case the tool shows a note.
Why is the 4K file so much bigger than my 1080p recording?
A 4K frame has four times the pixels of a 1080p frame, and screen content is hard to compress because text has very little redundancy. Output often runs at a higher bitrate than the source, so files are usually several times bigger. Use the Video Compressor if you need it smaller.
How long does a screen recording upscale take?
On a device with WebGPU, a 2 to 3 minute 1080p recording usually takes 1 to 3 minutes to reach 4K. Without WebGPU the tool falls back to the CPU, which is much slower. Trim first, close other tabs, and avoid running 5 or more 4K files at once.
What screen recorders does it support?
It accepts the output of any recorder that produces MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV or 3GP. That covers OBS, Loom, Zoom local recordings, QuickTime on macOS, Snipping Tool on Windows, ScreenPal and most game-capture tools. MOV from QuickTime works in all modern browsers.
Is my screen recording uploaded anywhere?
No. The recording is decoded, upscaled and re-encoded in your browser. Open your browser Network tab while it runs and you will see that no request carries your file.
Can I batch upscale several screen recordings?
Yes. Up to 10 files per batch and up to 300 MB and 3 minutes per file. For 4K, run 2 to 4 at a time because screen content plus 4K is memory-heavy. The result downloads as one ZIP.
Can I go beyond 4K?
No. The tool tops out at 4K class sizes to keep processing stable in the browser, and it never scales a video down.
