What is the ToolDeck online video editor?
ToolDeck Video Editor is a free, browser-based video editor with a multi-track timeline, AI captions, SRT and VTT subtitle support, automatic silence removal, filters, transitions and chroma key. It uses WebCodecs and WebAssembly to edit and render on your own device, so your files are never uploaded to a server. It needs no account, adds no watermark and exports MP4 up to 4K at 60 fps.
It is best for short videos, social clips, tutorials, subtitles and private footage. It is not built for very long films or for cloud features such as stock libraries, motion tracking and AI background removal. Its AI captions recognise English speech today; subtitle files in any language can be imported.
How to add captions and edit a video in 3 steps
- 1
Import your media
Drop videos, photos and music into the editor. Files are opened in your browser and are not uploaded.
- 2
Add captions and edit on the timeline
Open the AI Captions and Subtitles tab and press Generate Captions, or import an SRT or VTT file. Then trim, split, cut silence and add text, filters and transitions.
- 3
Render and download
Choose resolution, frame rate and GPU or CPU, then render. Download the finished MP4, and the SRT or VTT file if you need it.
Pro editing features, free
Free AI auto captions
Open-source Whisper speech recognition turns English speech into editable caption clips. Pick from 40+ caption styles, adjust outline, glow and box, and fix any word on the timeline. The model downloads once and your audio never leaves your device.
SRT and VTT subtitle files
Import an SRT or VTT file in any language and burn it into your video, add captions by hand, and export your captions as SRT or VTT for YouTube and other platforms.
Remove silence automatically
Set the silence level and minimum pause, and the editor cuts the quiet parts and closes the gaps. Tick "Apply to all clips" to process a whole track in one click.
Multi-track timeline
Main, overlay, text and two audio tracks. Drag to move, drag edges to trim, snap to clips, the playhead and beat markers. Undo and redo up to 100 steps.
Scene detection and beat markers
Split a long clip at every scene change, or add markers on the beats of your music so cuts land on the rhythm. All analysis runs locally.
GPU or CPU rendering
The WebCodecs engine renders frame by frame, using your graphics card when you have one and your CPU when you do not. A real-time recorder is the fallback for other browsers.
Filters, green screen, transitions
Twelve looks, manual colour sliders, vignette, chroma key, eight transitions, Ken Burns motion and fades. Auto enhance tunes brightness, contrast and colour for you.
Any aspect ratio and speed
16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 4:3, 3:4 and 21:9 with a blurred-background option for vertical video. Speed from 0.25x to 4x, freeze frame, detach audio and voiceover recording.
What you can make with this video editor
TikTok, Reels and Shorts

Trim takes, remove dead air, add lower thirds and a voiceover, and export 1080p or 4K without a watermark.
Subtitles and accessibility
Generate English captions on your device or import an SRT or VTT file, fix the words, restyle them and export the subtitle file too.
Lectures, podcasts and screen recordings
Cut long pauses from recorded lessons and talking videos in one pass and keep the useful parts.

Free, watermark and sign-up
What is the best free online video editor with no watermark?
ToolDeck Video Editor is a free browser-based editor that adds no watermark, needs no account and never uploads your files. It includes a multi-track timeline, free AI captions, silence removal and MP4 export up to 4K. It is a strong fit for short videos, social clips and private footage. If you need stock footage, cloud templates or motion tracking, a cloud editor suits you better.
Is the editor really free, with no hidden limits?
Yes. ToolDeck sets no credits, no daily cap, no video length limit and no sign-up. The practical limits come from your device: browser memory, processor speed and graphics card, plus a 1 GB limit per imported file.
Do I need to create an account or sign in?
No. Open the page, drop in your files and start editing. There is no login, no email wall and no trial period.
Is it a free CapCut alternative for auto captions?
It covers the same core job: multi-track editing, text, filters, transitions and automatic captions with no watermark. Several reviews report that CapCut moved auto captions and some AI tools behind a paid plan, so check its current free tier. ToolDeck does not include cloud features such as stock templates, stock music, motion tracking or AI background removal, and its AI captions currently recognise English speech.
How is it different from online editors like Clipchamp, Canva or Kapwing?
Many online editors upload your files and render in the cloud, and some add watermarks or limits on free plans. ToolDeck edits and renders inside your browser, so files stay on your device and exports have no watermark. Cloud editors offer stock libraries and cloud AI that ToolDeck does not.
Privacy and security
Does it upload my videos?
No. Editing and rendering happen inside your browser tab. To check, open the Network tab in your browser developer tools while you edit and export. The only downloads are the editor code and, if you use AI captions, the open speech model from a public CDN.
Is it safe for private or confidential footage?
Your files are processed locally and never sent to ToolDeck servers, which makes it a good fit for private or client footage. Keep your browser and device updated, and avoid shared computers for sensitive work.
Do AI captions send my audio to the cloud?
No. Whisper speech recognition runs on your device. Only the open model file is downloaded once from a public CDN and then cached in your browser. Your audio is not sent anywhere.
Does it work offline?
After the page and editor code have loaded, editing and rendering run locally and do not need the internet. AI captions need a one-time model download first. Reloading the page while offline may not work unless your browser has cached it.
Captions, subtitles and AI tools
How do I add subtitles or captions automatically?
Import your video, open the AI Captions and Subtitles tab on the left and press Generate Captions. Whisper runs on your device and adds caption clips on the Text track. You can edit, restyle or delete each one. Captions are not perfect, so review the text before exporting.
Which languages do the AI captions support?
The built-in speech model is English only, so AI captions work best for clear English audio. Accuracy drops with background noise, strong accents and music. For other languages, import an SRT or VTT subtitle file and burn it into the video.
Can I import an SRT or VTT file and burn subtitles into my video?
Yes. Open the AI Captions and Subtitles tab, press Import SRT / VTT file and choose your file. The cues become editable caption clips that use your chosen style, and they are rendered into the exported MP4. ASS and SSA files are not supported.
Can I export subtitles as an SRT or VTT file?
Yes. After generating, importing or adding captions, open Export and press SRT or VTT. Only captions are exported; ordinary text titles and stickers are not.
How accurate are the auto captions?
Accuracy is good for clear English speech and drops with background noise, strong accents and music. Always review the text, especially names and technical terms. Captions are normal text clips, so fixes are quick.
Can I remove silence from a video?
Yes. Select a clip, open the AI tab, set the silence level and minimum pause, then press Cut silent parts. It splits the clip at the quiet parts and removes them. Tick Apply to all clips to process every clip on that track.
What do scene detection and beat detection do?
Scene detection finds cuts in a clip and splits it at those points. Beat detection finds the rhythm of your music and adds markers so clips and cuts can snap to the beat. Both run locally in your browser.
Editing features
Can I make vertical videos for TikTok, Reels and Shorts?
Yes. Choose 9:16 in the Ratio menu. The editor sets the ratio automatically when your first clip is vertical. Turn on Blurred background to fill the sides when a clip does not fit.
Does it support green screen (chroma key)?
Yes. Open the Style tab on an overlay clip, enable chroma key, pick the key colour and adjust tolerance. Place the clip above your background clip.
Can I record a voiceover?
Yes. In the Audio tab, press Record. Playback starts so you can talk over the video, and the take is added to the Audio track. Your browser asks for microphone permission first.
Can I change video speed or make slow motion?
Yes. Set clip speed from 0.25x to 4x. You can also freeze a frame, detach audio from a clip and fade volume in or out.
How many tracks and clips can I use?
The timeline has a main track, an overlay track, a text track and two audio tracks. The number of clips is limited only by your device memory.
Can I merge, trim and split videos?
Yes. Drop several clips on the timeline to merge them, drag clip edges to trim, and press S to split at the playhead. Ripple delete and Close Gaps remove empty space on the timeline.
Are keyboard shortcuts available?
Yes. Space plays and pauses, S splits, Delete removes a clip, Shift+Delete ripple deletes, Ctrl+D duplicates, Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y undo and redo, arrow keys step frames, and plus and minus zoom the timeline.
Formats, export and quality
What formats can I import and export?
Import MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV (if your browser can play it), common image formats and MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG audio. Export is MP4 (H.264 with AAC audio) in Chrome and Edge. The recorder engine exports MP4 or WebM depending on the browser. Captions export as SRT or VTT, and the audio mix exports as WAV.
What is the maximum export resolution?
You can export up to 4K at 60 fps if your device has enough memory and processing power. For most social videos, 1080p at 30 fps is faster and plenty sharp.
How does GPU and CPU rendering work?
Export uses WebCodecs to encode H.264 video. With hardware acceleration on, your graphics card encodes the video when the browser supports it. With it off, the CPU does the work. If your browser has no WebCodecs, a real-time recorder is used instead.
Why is rendering slow?
Without a graphics card, rendering runs on the CPU, and 4K, 60 fps or many layers make it slower. Try 1080p, 30 fps, fewer effects and close other tabs. Mobile devices are much slower than a desktop.
What is the maximum video length and file size?
Each imported file can be up to 1 GB. Projects of a few minutes work best. Very long projects can run out of browser memory, so split them into parts.
Why does my export fail or the tab crash?
Usually the browser ran out of memory. Close other tabs, lower the resolution or frame rate, remove heavy effects, trim big source files first, or split a long project into parts. Chrome or Edge on desktop is the most reliable.
Devices and browsers
Which browser works best?
Chrome and Edge on desktop give the best results because they support WebCodecs for fast GPU or CPU export. Firefox works with the compatibility engine. Safari has limited support for some canvas filters.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
The editor loads on mobile, but the layout and performance are built for desktop. For serious editing and exports use Chrome or Edge on a computer.
Does it work on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook?
Yes. It runs in a modern browser on any operating system. Use the latest Chrome or Edge for the best speed.
Legal and responsible use
Is it legal to use music and clips I find online?
Only use music, footage and images you own or are licensed to use. Ignoring copyright can get videos blocked or taken down on social platforms. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can I use exported videos commercially?
ToolDeck adds no watermark and claims no rights over your exports. Whether you can use a video commercially depends on the rights to the footage, music, fonts and images inside it, so make sure you are licensed to use them.
What this editor does well, and where it is limited
Everything runs on your own computer, so results depend on your browser, memory and graphics card. Check this table before a big project.
| Project type | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Short clips, social videos, tutorials | Works well | Up to a few minutes in 1080p renders quickly, especially with a GPU. |
| English captions and subtitles | Works well | Review the text. Speech recognition can mishear names, accents and noisy audio. |
| AI captions in other languages | Not supported yet | The speech model is English only. Import an SRT or VTT file in any language instead. |
| 4K or 60 fps projects | Works, needs a strong PC | Uses a lot of memory. Close other tabs, or export at 1080p. |
| Very long videos (over 30 minutes) | Not recommended | Browsers limit memory. Split the project into parts. |
| Filters and effects in Safari | Limited | Safari support for canvas filters varies. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for colour effects. |
| Motion tracking, AI background removal | Not supported | Those need cloud AI. Use chroma key if you shot on a green screen. |
Tips for smoother editing
Use 1080p while editing
Preview is always lightweight. Choose your final resolution only when you export.
Trim big files first
Cut long recordings with the Video Trimmer, or shrink them with the Video Compressor, so the editor uses less memory.
Keep the tab visible while rendering
Browsers slow down background tabs. The Compatibility engine records in real time and needs the tab open the whole time.
Check captions before exporting
Captions are normal text clips. Click one to fix words, change the font or move it, then export the subtitle file.
ToolDeck vs cloud video editors
Cloud editors upload your files, render on their servers and offer stock libraries and cloud AI. ToolDeck trades that for privacy and no limits: nothing is uploaded and the export has no watermark. Choose by what your project needs.
| Feature | ToolDeck | Typical cloud editors |
|---|---|---|
| Your video is uploaded to a server | Never | Usually yes, for cloud rendering |
| Watermark on export | None | Varies by plan |
| Sign-up needed | Not required | Often |
| Daily limits, credits or video length caps | None from ToolDeck | Varies by plan |
| Multi-track timeline, text, overlays | Yes | Yes |
| Auto captions | Yes, English speech (on your device) | Yes |
| Import and export SRT or VTT subtitle files | Yes | Varies by plan |
| Works offline after loading | Editing yes, AI model needs first download | Usually no |
| Render speed on a weak PC | Depends on your device | Fast (cloud servers) |
| Cloud templates, stock music and stock video | No | Yes |
| Cloud AI effects (background removal, tracking) | No | Yes |
General comparison. Individual products differ, and features, limits and pricing change.
Use media you have the right to edit
Only edit and publish footage, music and images you own or are licensed to use. Using someone else's work without permission can infringe copyright and get your videos blocked. You are responsible for how you use the result.
More free video tools
Trim, compress, convert and upscale. Nothing uploaded, ever.
Your videos never leave your device
There is no upload step and no account. Editing and rendering happen in your browser. If you use AI captions, the open speech model is downloaded once from a public CDN and runs on your device. You can check this yourself: open your browser developer tools, go to the Network tab, then edit and export a video and watch for file uploads. Read how we keep it private.
