How do I cut a video to the beat of the music for free?

Import your clips and a music file, open the AI tab and press Detect Beats. Markers appear on the timeline and the BPM is estimated. Drag cuts, text and transitions to snap on the markers, then export an MP4. Detection and rendering run in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and the output has no watermark.

What is the ToolDeck beat sync video editor?

ToolDeck Beat Sync Video Editor is a free browser tool that aligns cuts with the rhythm of a music track. It analyses the audio on your device, estimates the BPM and places beat markers on the timeline. Clips, text and transitions snap to those markers, so a cut, title change or transition lands exactly on the beat. It exports H.264 MP4 at up to 4K. No account and no watermark.

It is built for dance videos, fitness montages, music video clips, product montages, sports edits and photo reels. It is not a DAW: there is no multitrack audio mixing, track warping or time-stretching. Strong regular beats detect best; jazz and orchestral tracks may need manual markers.

How to make a beat sync video in 3 steps

  1. 1

Drop clips and music on the timeline

Add video clips and an MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG music file.

  2. 2

    Detect beats and place markers

Open the AI tab and press Detect Beats. Markers appear on the timeline and the BPM is estimated.

  3. 3

Snap edits to markers and export

Drag cuts, text and transitions to snap on markers, then render an MP4.

Beat sync features, free

  • Auto beat detection on any music file

Import an MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG and detect the beat grid on your device. The BPM is estimated automatically.

  • Beat markers on the timeline

Markers appear on the timeline at each detected beat so you can see where to cut.

  • Snap cuts, text and transitions

Drag clip edges, text clips and transitions; they snap to the nearest beat marker.

  • Combine with silence removal

Cut quiet gaps first, then align the remaining cuts to the beat for tight pacing.

  • Freeze frames on specific beats

Hold a frame for a moment on a chosen beat to emphasise a hit.

  • Speed ramps between markers

Speed up or slow down between beat markers for a rhythmic transition.

  • Any aspect ratio

16:9, 9:16, 1:1 and other ratios. Beat-synced edits work for horizontal videos and vertical social clips.

  • MP4 export at frame-accurate marker positions

Export an H.264 MP4 with cuts rendered exactly where the markers sit.

What you can make with beat-synced cuts

  • Dance videos cut to the drop

Place cuts on the build-up and hit the drop on the strongest beat.

  • Fitness montages

Sync each exercise or rep to the music for a high-energy montage.

  • Music video clips

Cut performance shots and B-roll to the beat grid.

  • Product montages synced to a beat

Show features on successive beats for a punchy product edit.

  • Sports highlight edits

Snap slow-motion and freeze frames to key moments in the music.

  • Slideshow and photo reel sync

Place photo changes and Ken Burns motion on beat markers.

What beat detection does well, and where it is limited

Beat detection is an audio analysis, not an arrangement tool. Check this table before relying on it for a complex track.

Music types and how beat detection handles them
Music typeResultNotes
4/4 EDM and pop beatsDetected wellStrong, regular beats are the easiest case.
Complex jazz or orchestral musicLess reliableTempo changes and rubato can confuse beat detection. Add markers manually.
Very quiet tracksNeed gain boostRaise the audio level before detection if the waveform is faint.
Changing the music trackRe-run detectionMarkers are tied to the analysed track. Detect again if you swap the music.
Full multitrack audio mixing (DAW)Not includedThis is a video editor, not a DAW. Use a separate audio tool for deep mixing.
Track warping and time-stretchingNot includedBeat detection does not warp audio to fit a grid.

Tips for better beat-synced edits

  • Detect beats after you choose the final track

Changing the music invalidates the markers, so lock the track first.

  • Use every other beat for cuts

Cutting on every beat can feel frantic. Try every second or fourth beat for a natural rhythm.

  • Combine with silence removal for talking footage

Remove pauses first, then align the remaining cuts to the music.

  • Raise quiet audio before detection

If the waveform is very faint, boost the gain first so beat detection has more signal to work with.

ToolDeck vs cloud beat sync editors

Cloud editors upload your clips for beat detection. ToolDeck analyses audio in your browser, so files stay on your device and exports have no watermark.
