How do I auto-split a video by scene for free?

Import the clip into the editor above, open the AI tab and press Detect Scenes. Frame-difference analysis finds the cuts on your device and turns each scene into a clip on the timeline. Trim or delete shots, then export an MP4. Nothing is uploaded, and the export has no watermark.

What is the ToolDeck video scene detector?

ToolDeck Video Scene Detector is a free browser tool that finds scene changes in a video and splits the clip at each cut. It analyses frames locally with a frame-difference algorithm, so nothing is uploaded. Each detected scene becomes an independent clip on the timeline that you can trim, delete or reorder, then export as an H.264 MP4. No account and no watermark.

It is built for highlight reels, interviews, montage rough cuts, travel B-roll selection and removing unusable takes. It finds cuts, not meaning — there is no AI shot classification, so it will not label shots as “close-up” or “wide”. Hard cuts detect best; fades and dissolves may need manual adjustment.

How to auto-split a video in 3 steps

  1. 1

Import a long clip and press Detect Scenes

Drop the video, open the AI tab and press Detect Scenes. Analysis runs on your device.

  2. 2

    Review the splits

Each scene appears as a clip. Keep, trim or delete shots. Adjust sensitivity if too many or too few splits were found.

  3. 3

    Export or keep editing

Render the remaining shots as an MP4, or continue adding captions, music and transitions.

Scene detection features, free

  • Auto split at scene changes

Frame-difference analysis finds hard cuts and splits the clip at each detected scene boundary.

  • Runs entirely on your device

Detection happens in your browser. The video is not uploaded to a server.

  • Splits become independent clips

Each detected scene becomes a separate clip on the timeline. Trim, delete or reorder shots individually.

  • Sensitivity control

Adjust the threshold to catch more soft cuts or only hard cuts, depending on the footage.

  • Combine with silence removal

For talking-head footage, detect scenes and then cut silent gaps in the resulting clips.

  • Beat markers on separate workflow

Use beat detection alongside scene splits when editing to music.

  • Trim each split clip

Drag clip edges to tighten each shot after detection.

  • Export MP4 or build a highlight reel

Delete unusable takes and export the remaining shots as an MP4, or continue editing into a highlight reel.

What you can do with auto scene splitting

  • Highlight reels from raw footage

Split a long shoot at every cut, delete weak takes and export a tight highlight reel.

  • Splitting interviews into answers

Detect scene changes between answers or camera angles and keep the best responses.

  • Building a montage from a long shoot

Turn a single long recording into individual shots you can rearrange into a montage.

  • Selecting B-roll from travel footage

Split travel footage into shots and pick the strongest B-roll for a story.

  • Removing unusable takes

Quickly isolate and delete blown takes, camera adjustments and accidental recordings.

  • Automating rough cuts

Use scene detection as a first pass, then trim and refine on the timeline.

What scene detection does well, and where it is limited

Detection is a frame-difference algorithm, not a semantic AI. Check this table before relying on it for a large project.

Scene detection project types and results
Project typeResultNotes
Hard cutsDetected wellClear cuts between shots are the strongest case.
Fades and dissolvesSometimes missedGradual transitions may not trigger a split; adjust sensitivity or split manually.
Very long videosSplit into partsProcess long recordings in sections to stay within browser memory.
Fast motion with no cutFalse positives possibleRapid movement can look like a scene change. Review the splits.
AI shot classificationNot includedThe tool detects cuts but does not label shots (e.g. “close-up” or “wide”).

Tips for cleaner scene splits

  • Start with default sensitivity

Run detection once at the default threshold, then raise or lower it if you get too many or too few splits.

  • Review before deleting

Scene detection can miss soft transitions. Skim the splits before removing takes.

  • Use with silence removal for interviews

After splitting, cut silent gaps in each answer to keep interviews tight.

  • Trim big files first

If a recording is very long, trim the usable section before running scene detection.

ToolDeck vs cloud scene detectors

Cloud tools upload your video for analysis. ToolDeck runs detection in your browser, so files stay on your device and exports have no watermark.
