What is the ToolDeck green screen video editor?

ToolDeck Green Screen Video Editor is a free, browser-based chroma key editor with a multi-track timeline, background replacement, picture-in-picture overlays, text and transitions. It uses WebCodecs, WebGL and WebAssembly to key and composite on your own device, so your files are never uploaded to a server. It needs no account, adds no watermark and exports MP4 up to 4K at 60 fps.

It is best for reaction videos, virtual presentations, explainer videos, gaming overlays and product demos. It is not built for very long films or for AI background removal without a green screen — that still needs cloud AI. For best results, shoot on a well-lit green or blue screen.

How to use a green screen in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Add your green screen footage

Drop your green screen clip on the timeline, above the background clip. Add the background image or video on the main track below. Files stay in your browser and are not uploaded.

  2. 2

Enable chroma key and pick the colour

Select the overlay clip, open the Style tab, enable chroma key and click the green or blue colour with the eyedropper. Adjust tolerance, edge softness and spill suppression until the edges are clean.

  3. 3

    Export the composed MP4

Choose resolution, frame rate and GPU or CPU, then render. Download the final MP4 with no watermark, ready for TikTok, YouTube, a client deliverable or a virtual meeting.

Pro chroma key features, free

  • One-click chroma key

Add your clip to the overlay track, enable chroma key in the Style tab, and pick the key colour with the eyedropper. Green and blue screens are removed instantly, and your subject drops cleanly over any background.

  • Replace with image or video

Choose a photo, a clip or a solid colour as the new background. Load a branded backdrop, a stock clip or a plain colour, and your subject sits in front, frame-accurate.

  • Edge softness and spill suppression

Fine-tune tolerance, edge softness and spill suppression to clean up frizzy hair, motion blur and green reflections on skin. Real-time preview shows the result while you slide.

  • Picture-in-picture on any track

Place the keyed clip on the overlay track, resize and reposition it anywhere. Stack multiple keyed clips for reactions, co-hosted commentary and side-by-side comparisons.

  • Text and lower thirds on top

A dedicated text track above the overlay keeps captions, lower thirds and call-outs readable above your keyed footage. Animate entrances and snap them to the beat of your music.

  • GPU or CPU rendering

The WebCodecs engine composites and encodes frame by frame, using your graphics card when you have one and your CPU when you do not. Chroma key is computed per pixel, in real time.

  • Any aspect ratio and speed

16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 4:3, 3:4 and 21:9. Speed from 0.25x to 4x, freeze frame, detach audio and record a voiceover. A blurred background fills the sides on a vertical canvas.

  • MP4, no watermark

Render an MP4 (H.264 and AAC) up to 4K at 60 fps. No watermark, no credits, no sign-up. Everything happens on your device, so a client clip never leaves the browser.

What you can make with this green screen editor

  • Reaction videos

Key a reaction clip over a viral video or a stock background. Beat markers align cuts and text pop-ins to the rhythm.

  • Virtual presentations

Put a presenter in front of a branded slide, dashboard or demo screen. Record the whole thing locally and export an MP4.

  • Educational explainers

Stand beside a diagram, a chart or a map. The chroma key makes the subject float over any visual asset.

  • Gaming overlays and stream recaps

Key the streamer’s webcam over a game clip, then trim the best moments and export for social.

  • Product demos

Place a product shot over a clean studio backdrop or a branded animated background, and add call-outs and text on top.

  • Weather and news style segments

Layer a presenter over a map or screenshot with picture-in-picture, and export a clean, watermark-free MP4.

Green screen video editor FAQ

Detailed answers about pricing, privacy, chroma key, background replacement, layering, rendering, formats and limits.

Free, watermark and sign-up

Is this green screen video editor really free with no watermark?

Yes. ToolDeck Green Screen Video Editor is free, adds no watermark on export, needs no account and never uploads your files. You get chroma key, background replacement, picture-in-picture, text overlays and MP4 export up to 4K at 60 fps. There are no credits, daily caps or length limits. The only limits come from your device.

Do I need to create an account or sign in?

No. Open the page, drop your green screen clip and background, enable chroma key and export. There is no login, no email wall and no trial period.

Does it upload my green screen footage?

No. Chroma key, compositing and encoding happen inside your browser tab. You can verify by opening the Network tab in your browser developer tools while you edit and export — you will only see the editor code and the AI model download if you use captions.

Chroma key basics

How do I remove a green screen from my video?

Place your green screen clip on the overlay track, add the background image or video below it on the main track, then select the overlay clip, open the Style tab, enable chroma key and click the green area with the eyedropper. Slide tolerance until the green is fully gone, then nudge edge softness for clean hair and shoulders.

Green screen or blue screen — which should I use?

Green is standard because most cameras and encoders keep green detail better, and most skin tones differ from green more than from blue. Use blue if your subject is wearing green, or if the scene is full of plants and grass. Blue is also common for darker complexions because it separates from skin tones well. In ToolDeck, both are picked with the same eyedropper.

What if my green screen footage is not lit evenly?

Raise tolerance a little and turn on spill suppression. If the key still eats into the subject, fix it at the source next time: light the screen separately from the subject, and keep them at least one meter apart. Evenly lit footage keys cleanly in seconds.

How do I fix green edges or green reflections on skin?

Enable spill suppression in the Style tab. This desaturates green tones left on hair, shoulders and hands. Combine it with edge softness to smooth the cut, and light your subject a little brighter than the screen to reduce bounce.

Can I key a blue screen instead of green?

Yes. Pick the blue colour with the eyedropper and adjust tolerance the same way. Avoid blue clothing and accessories in front of a blue screen, just as you would avoid green in front of a green screen.

Background replacement

Can I replace the background with an image?

Yes. Add a JPG, PNG or WebP on the main track below the keyed clip. The subject floats over the image with full opacity and sharp edges.

Can I use a video as the new background?

Yes. Drop an MP4 or WebM on the main track. The background plays at its own rate and the keyed subject stays frame-accurate above it. This is great for animated explainers and dynamic presentations.

Can I make the background transparent?

Yes, if you export to a format that supports alpha. In practice most platforms require an opaque MP4, so a solid colour, a blurred copy of the subject shot or a matching graphic background is the more useful option for social delivery.

Can I add more than one keyed clip?

Yes. Place one keyed clip on the overlay track and add others on additional overlay layers. This is how you build co-host shots, side-by-side reactions and multi-camera virtual studios.

Layering and overlays

Can I add text and lower thirds above the keyed footage?

Yes. The text track sits above the overlay, so lower thirds, captions and call-outs stay readable over your keyed subject. Animate the entrance and snap it to a beat marker.

Can I add stickers, logos and emojis?

Yes. Add them as image overlays on the overlay track above the keyed clip, or as text-track elements. Resize and position freely.

Can I add transitions between keyed shots?

Yes. Eight transitions are available between clips on the same track. Cross-dissolve and slide transitions work well between two keyed shots with different backgrounds.

Quality, export and limits

What resolution can I export?

Up to 4K at 60 fps if your device has enough memory and processing power. For social, 1080p is faster and plenty sharp. Choose GPU rendering for the fastest export.

What formats are supported?

Import MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV (if your browser can play it), JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF, plus MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG audio. Export is MP4 (H.264 with AAC audio) in Chrome and Edge. The recorder engine exports MP4 or WebM depending on the browser.

Why do my key edges look fuzzy?

Chroma key struggles with fine hair, motion blur and soft shoulders. Lower tolerance slightly, increase edge softness, and add spill suppression. A better-lit source shot is always the real fix.

Why is rendering slow?

Without a GPU, encoding runs on the CPU, and 4K, 60 fps or many layers slow it down. Try 1080p, 30 fps, fewer effects, close other tabs, and use Chrome or Edge on desktop.

What is the maximum file size?

1 GB per imported file. Projects of a few minutes work best. Very long projects can run out of browser memory, so split them into parts.

Devices and browsers

Which browser works best for chroma key?

Chrome and Edge on desktop give the best results because they support WebCodecs and WebGL for fast preview and export. Firefox works with the compatibility engine. Safari has limited support for some effects.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

The editor loads on mobile, but layout and performance are built for desktop. For serious green screen editing use Chrome or Edge on a computer, then move the MP4 to your phone.

Legal and responsible use

Can I use any background image or video?

Only use backgrounds you own or are licensed to use, whether they are stock footage, images from a paid library or your own shots. Ignoring copyright can get videos blocked. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I use exported videos commercially?

ToolDeck adds no watermark and claims no rights over your exports. Whether a video is usable commercially depends on the rights to the footage, music, fonts and backgrounds inside it. Make sure you are licensed to use them.

What this editor does well, and where it is limited

Everything runs on your own computer, so results depend on your browser, memory, graphics card and — most of all — how well the green screen was lit.

Project types and how well the editor handles them
Project typeResultNotes
Well-lit green screen footageWorks wellClean edges in a couple of clicks. Tolerance and softness handle most shots.
Uneven lighting on the screenNeeds tuningRaise tolerance slightly and use spill suppression. Fixing the source shot is always easier than fixing it in the editor.
Fine hair, motion blur, soft edgesUsableChroma key struggles with fine detail. Edge softness helps, but a properly lit screen is the real fix.
Blue screen instead of greenWorksPick the blue colour with the eyedropper. Avoid blue clothing and accessories in front of a blue screen.
Green reflections on skin or clothesNeeds tuningEnable spill suppression. Light your subject a little brighter than the screen to reduce bounce.
Replacing with a video backgroundWorksThe background clip plays at its own rate. Add it on the main track below the keyed clip.
AI background removal without a green screenNot supportedThat needs cloud AI. Shoot on a green or blue screen for the cleanest result.
4K green screen projectsWorks, needs a strong PCUses a lot of memory. Try 1080p for social, 4K only on a desktop with a GPU.

Tips for a cleaner chroma key

  • Light the screen evenly

Two soft lights on the screen, one on your subject. Uneven green is the #1 cause of bad keys.

  • Stand away from the screen

A meter or more of distance cuts green spill on skin and clothes. It saves you from fixing it later.

  • Avoid green clothing

Any green in front of a green screen will disappear with the background. Same for blue against a blue screen.

  • Match motion blur and grain

If your background is crisp and your subject is grainy, the key looks fake. Add a subtle matching effect in the Style tab.

ToolDeck vs cloud green screen editors

Cloud editors upload your files, render on their servers and often limit chroma key or overlays to paid plans. ToolDeck trades that for privacy and no limits: nothing is uploaded and the export has no watermark.
