Why you need OCR to convert a scanned PDF to Word
A PDF from a scanner, a phone camera or a screenshot usually has no text layer. It is only a picture of each page. A regular PDF to Word converter cannot edit a picture, so it fails or hands back a Word file full of images.
OCR solves that. Optical Character Recognition reads the pixels on the page and identifies each letter, word and line as editable text. This tool combines PDF parsing with OCR: text-based PDFs convert instantly using their existing text layer, and scanned pages go through Tesseract for recognition, without sending a single byte to a server.
Only need searchable text rather than a Word file? Use OCR PDF. Need to cut a large scan into smaller parts first? Try Split PDF.
How to convert a scanned PDF to Word in 3 steps
- 1
Upload your scanned PDF
Drop a PDF from your device. Scanner output, phone photos saved as PDF and image-only PDFs all work. The file stays in your browser.
- 2
Choose the language and run OCR
Pick the main language of the document (English, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Spanish, French or German). Tesseract.js reads each page locally; pages that already have a text layer are used instantly.
- 3
Download the editable Word file
Download a real .docx with paragraph breaks and page breaks. Open and edit it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.
Features of our free PDF to Word OCR converter
True OCR for scanned PDFs
Reads image-only pages with Tesseract OCR. If a page already has a text layer, it uses that instead: instant and exact.
Smart text detection
Detects page by page whether OCR is needed, so a text-based PDF converts in seconds and only real scans use OCR time.
Real .docx output
Produces a proper Word document with paragraphs and page breaks, not a plain .txt file renamed.
7 OCR languages incl. Urdu
English, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Spanish, French and German. Right-to-left scripts are supported.
No upload, ever
Your PDF is parsed in memory and recognised on your device. Contracts, IDs and invoices never reach a server.
Page-by-page progress
See which page is being processed and how much OCR is left. Cancel at any time.
Urdu, Arabic and Hindi OCR: scanned PDF to Word
Most free converters focus on English. This tool also reads scanned Urdu PDFs, Arabic PDFs and Hindi (Devanagari) PDFs, including right-to-left text, and exports them as a Word file you can edit, translate or proofread. Spanish, French and German are supported too.
For the best Urdu, Arabic or Hindi result, scan at 300 DPI or higher, keep the page straight, select the matching language before converting, and proofread the output. OCR on complex scripts is harder than on English, so always check important text.

Browser-based OCR vs upload-based PDF converters
Many online PDF to Word OCR tools send your file to a server. That is a real risk for contracts, ID cards, medical forms and financial records. Here is how local OCR compares.
| Feature | ToolDeck (local OCR) | Typical upload converter |
|---|---|---|
| File leaves your device | Never | Usually uploaded to a server |
| Sign-up required | No | Often, or a daily limit |
| Watermark on output | None | Common on free plans |
| Urdu / Arabic / Hindi OCR | Yes | Varies, often paid |
| Works offline after first load | Yes | No |
| Output | Real .docx | Varies |
How to get the most accurate OCR results
Scan at 300 DPI or higher
Resolution is the biggest factor in OCR accuracy. 300 DPI is the usual sweet spot for printed text; go higher for small print.
Straighten and crop
Skewed or tilted pages reduce accuracy. Re-scan flat, or fix the page first with a PDF editor.
Pick the right language
Choose the main language before converting. Using English on an Urdu or Arabic page produces garbage output.
Use good lighting for phone scans
Avoid shadows, glare and blur. Even lighting and a steady hand make a visible difference.
Proofread numbers and names
OCR can confuse look-alike characters such as 0/O and 1/l. Always check figures, dates and names before sharing.
Split very large files first
For hundreds of pages, split the PDF into chunks to keep browser memory use low and conversion fast.
Frequently asked questions about scanned PDF to Word OCR
How do I convert a scanned PDF to editable Word?
Open the converter above, drop in your scanned PDF, choose the document language, and click convert. OCR reads each page in your browser and produces an editable .docx file you can download and open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice. No upload or account is needed.
What is PDF to Word OCR?
It is a converter that reads a scanned PDF, which is only an image of each page, and rebuilds the text as an editable Word .docx file. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) identifies the letters on each page so you can edit, copy and search the text.
Why can I not edit my PDF after converting it to Word?
Because the PDF is a scan. A scanned PDF contains pictures of pages, not text, so a normal PDF to Word converter has nothing to convert and returns the same images. Use an OCR converter like this one to recognise the text first.
Is this scanned PDF to Word converter really free?
Yes. It is free to use with no sign-up, no email, no daily limit and no watermark on the Word file.
Is it safe? Does it upload my PDF?
It is safe because nothing is uploaded. Parsing, page rendering, OCR and .docx generation all run inside your browser tab, so your PDF never leaves your device. That makes it suitable for contracts, invoices, ID documents and other sensitive files.
How is this different from a normal PDF to Word converter?
A normal PDF to Word converter only works when the PDF already contains selectable text. Scanned PDFs from a scanner, a phone camera or an image export have no text layer. This tool adds OCR for scans and uses the existing text layer when a page already has one.
Which languages does the OCR support?
English, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Spanish, French and German. Select the main language of your document before converting for the best accuracy.
Can I convert a scanned Urdu PDF to Word?
Yes. Choose Urdu as the OCR language and the tool will recognise right-to-left Urdu text. Accuracy is best on clean, high-resolution printed pages. Decorative or highly stylised calligraphy is harder to read, so always proofread the result.
Can I convert a scanned Arabic or Hindi PDF to Word?
Yes. Select Arabic or Hindi as the language. Arabic is handled as right-to-left text. For mixed-language pages, pick the main language and check the other parts manually.
How accurate is the OCR?
On clean, printed, 300 DPI scans, accuracy is typically in the 95 to 99 percent range for Latin-script languages. Blurry scans, skewed pages, small print, stamps over text and low contrast reduce accuracy, so proofread important documents.
Can it read handwriting?
Not reliably. The OCR engine is trained mainly on printed text, so handwriting often produces garbled output. For handwritten notes, expect to retype or correct heavily.
Will the Word file keep the original formatting?
The .docx keeps paragraph breaks and page breaks, so the structure of the document is preserved. Exact fonts, sizes, colours and multi-column layouts are not reproduced because OCR focuses on making the text editable. If your PDF already has selectable text and you need closer layout fidelity, use the PDF to Word tool.
How long does the conversion take?
Text-based PDFs convert in about 2 to 5 seconds per page. Scanned pages usually take roughly 5 to 30 seconds each, depending on resolution and your device. The first time you use a language, its language pack (about 15 MB) is downloaded once and cached.
What is the maximum file size?
Up to 100 MB per PDF. Very large scans, such as 300 or more pages at 600 DPI, may run out of browser memory. Split them first with the Split PDF tool and convert in parts.
Does it work on mobile (Android and iPhone)?
Yes, it runs in any modern mobile browser. Large scanned files are faster on a laptop or desktop because OCR runs on your own device.
Does it work offline?
Yes. After the first conversion the language pack is cached, so later OCR runs work offline. Keep the page open, disconnect, and test it.
Can I use Google Docs or Microsoft Word instead?
Google Docs can OCR a PDF if you upload it to Google Drive, which means the file is sent to Google. Microsoft Word can open some PDFs but does not do true OCR on scans. This tool keeps the file on your device and gives you a .docx directly.
What is the difference between PDF to Word OCR and OCR PDF?
PDF to Word OCR outputs an editable Word .docx file. OCR PDF extracts or adds a searchable text layer from a scan. Pick Word when you want to edit the content, and OCR PDF when you only need to search or copy text.
