Video to GIF: turn any clip into an animated GIF

Convert any video into an animated GIF, right in your browser. 100% secure, nothing uploaded, nothing stored. Two-pass palette optimization for the sharpest colors. Live preview, live size estimate, no watermark.

  • 100% secure and private
  • Sharp two-pass palette
  • Frame rate and width control
  • Works offline
Before you start: GIF is an old, heavy format. Keep clips short (5–10 seconds) and pick a smaller width for the best size-to-quality ratio. The engine uses a two-pass palette optimization for much better colors than single-pass tools.

100% secure. Your video is never uploaded or stored. How we keep it private

  • 100% Secure
  • No Upload
  • No Storage
  • No Sign-up
  • Works Offline
  • No Watermark

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your video

Drag or click to choose. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored. Max 100 MB and 20 seconds per GIF.

  2. 2

    Trim, size and frame rate

Preview loops only your selected range. Pick fps, width, loop and dither.

  3. 3

    Download your GIF

Get an animated GIF that plays inline in any browser, chat app or email. No watermark.

Everything you get for free

  • Two-pass palette optimization

The same technique professional GIF tools use. We analyze colors in a first pass, then encode with that palette. The result is dramatically sharper than single-pass encoders, especially on gradients, skin tones and text.

  • 100% secure, nothing uploaded

Decoding, palette generation and GIF encoding all happen in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm. Your clips, private videos and client footage never leave your device.

  • Full control over size and quality

Pick any frame rate from 8 to 24 fps and width from 320 to 800 px. The live estimated size updates as you change settings, so you never get a surprise 50 MB GIF.

  • Trim before converting

Only the part you need becomes the GIF. This saves huge processing time and keeps the output small. The preview loops only the selected range.

  • Loop on/off and dither control

Choose whether the GIF loops forever or plays once. Toggle smoother dither for gradients or keep it off for smaller files. Rare options on free tools.

  • No sign-up, no email, no watermark

Open, drop the video, choose settings, download. No account, no confirmation email, no watermark or branded corner stamp on any frame.

What people use it for

  • React GIFs for chat

Cut a reaction shot from a movie or clip and drop it into a group chat.

  • Product demos

Turn a screen recording of a UI feature into a short looping GIF for a landing page.

  • Social media clips

GIFs autoplay everywhere (Twitter, Reddit, Discord, Slack, Notion) with no click needed.

  • Tutorial snippets

A short 5-second loop explains more than a paragraph. Perfect for documentation and blog posts.

  • Emails that play

Unlike video, GIFs animate inline in most email clients, with no click and no external link.

  • Slides and presentations

Add a short looping GIF to a slide deck. Loops automatically, no player controls to fumble with.

Questions people ask

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser using ffmpeg.wasm. Your video never leaves your device, so we cannot see it even if we wanted to.

Is it really 100% secure?

Yes. There is no upload step, no server processing, no temporary storage. Open your browser network tab while you use the tool and you will not see your video being sent anywhere.

Why is there a 20-second limit?

GIF is an old format with no inter-frame compression like video. A 30-second GIF can easily exceed 50 MB, which crashes browsers and is useless for chat or email. 20 seconds is the sweet spot for reaction clips, demos and loops.

Why are my colors washed out on other tools but not here?

Other free tools use a single-pass GIF encoder. We use a two-pass approach: first we analyze the video to build a custom 256-color palette, then we encode with that palette. This gives dramatically better colors, especially on skin tones and gradients.

What frame rate should I pick?

12 fps is the recommended default. It is smooth enough for most content and keeps the file small. Use 8 fps for simple motion or small files, 16 or 24 fps for smoother action.

What width should I pick?

640 px is a good default for most modern use. 320 px for chat and Slack where size matters. 480 px for social. 800 px only if quality is the priority and the file can be larger.

What is smoother dither?

Dithering mixes pixels of nearby colors to simulate colors outside the palette. Bayer (default) is fast and small. Floyd-Steinberg (smoother) looks better on gradients and photos but adds file size.

Can I loop the GIF forever?

Yes. Loop is on by default. Turn it off if you want the GIF to play once and stop.

What video formats work?

MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, M4V, OGV, AVI and any format your browser can decode. MP4 is the safest choice.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android both work. Mobile is slower, so use a shorter clip and lower frame rate on phones.

Does it work offline?

After the first use the engine is cached. After that, you can switch off WiFi and convert locally.

Can I make multiple GIFs at once?

Not in this version. It handles one clip at a time. Batch mode is on our roadmap.

100% secure, nothing stored

Decoding, palette generation and GIF encoding all happen in your browser. There is no upload step, no temporary server-side storage, no queue, no retention. Open your browser network tab while you use the tool and you will not see your video being sent anywhere. See why ToolDeck is different.
