Why this is the best YouTube thumbnail downloader

Most downloader sites fill your screen with ads and pop-ups before you can paste a link. This one does not.

How it works

  1. 1

    Paste the YouTube link

Copy the video URL from your browser or the YouTube app, paste it into the box, and hit Get thumbnails.

  2. 2

    Pick a size

Every available size loads with a live preview and a "not available" state where YouTube does not serve a max-res image.

  3. 3

    Download or copy

Click Download JPG for a single size, Download all as ZIP to grab everything, or Copy URL to embed the thumbnail elsewhere.

Everything you get for free

  • Every size in one view

Max HD (1280×720), Standard HD (640×480), High (480×360), Medium (320×180) and Small (120×90) are all shown at once with real previews. Pick the one you need and download it in one click.

  • Any YouTube URL format

Paste a standard watch link, youtu.be short link, /shorts/, /embed/, /live/, or even the raw 11-character video ID. The tool extracts the ID automatically.

  • Live availability check

Not every video has a Max HD thumbnail. The tool checks each size in real time and greys out the ones that are not available, so you never download a broken image.

  • Download all as a ZIP

One click bundles every available size into a single ZIP named after the video. Useful for editors and designers who want all resolutions at hand.

  • Copy direct URL

Every size shows its direct i.ytimg.com URL, ready to copy. Drop it into a website, an app, a Discord embed, or an image tag, with no re-hosting needed.

  • Recent video history

The last six videos you looked up are saved in your browser (localStorage only) so you can jump back to a thumbnail without pasting the URL again.

  • Works on mobile

The tool is fully responsive. On iPhone and Android, tap Paste to grab the YouTube URL from your clipboard, then download the image straight to Photos.

  • No watermark, no rescaling

Thumbnails are fetched directly from YouTube's CDN at their original resolution. No re-compression, no watermark, no logo stamped on the image. What YouTube has is what you get.

What people use it for

  • Build a video preview page

Designers and developers grab the max-res thumbnail to show as the hero image on a landing page, blog post or newsletter, without uploading anything.

  • Analyse a competitor's thumbnails

Content creators save rival thumbnails at full resolution and study the composition, colours and text, side by side in a folder, without screenshots.

  • Thumbnail inspiration board

Collect the best-performing thumbnails in your niche into a Pinterest board or mood folder. Download all sizes as a ZIP and pick from the batch.

  • Repost with credit on social

With the creator's permission, share their thumbnail on Instagram, Twitter or a community post. The direct URL keeps the resolution sharp.

  • Recover a thumbnail you lost

If your original project file with the thumbnail is gone, you can pull the exact image back from the live video. No re-design needed.

  • Bug reports and case studies

When you write a case study, review or technical analysis of a video or channel, embed the actual thumbnail as a visual reference.

Questions people ask

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?

Copy the URL of the YouTube video, paste it into the box above, click Get thumbnails, then click Download JPG on the size you want. Every available size is shown at once, from 1280×720 Max HD down to 120×90 small. You can also click Copy URL to grab the direct image address.

Why is the Max HD (1280×720) thumbnail missing for some videos?

YouTube only generates the maxresdefault thumbnail when the original video was uploaded at 1080p or higher, and only after processing is complete. Older videos, some Shorts, and videos still processing will not have it. The tool checks this automatically and greys out the size when it is not available.

What are the exact thumbnail sizes YouTube serves?

YouTube serves five standard sizes for every video: maxresdefault (1280×720), sddefault (640×480), hqdefault (480×360), mqdefault (320×180), and default (120×90). All five are JPEGs served from i.ytimg.com. The tool fetches the direct URL for each.

Is the downloaded image the original quality?

Yes. The tool pulls the file directly from YouTube's CDN (i.ytimg.com) at its original resolution, with no re-encoding, no rescaling and no watermark. What you download is exactly what YouTube serves to your browser when the video is displayed.

Does it work on YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a Shorts URL (youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID) and the tool extracts the ID and loads the same thumbnail set. Note that Shorts are vertical, so the downloaded thumbnails will be a horizontal crop of the vertical video. That is what YouTube generates.

Can I download a thumbnail from a live stream?

Yes. Paste a youtube.com/live/VIDEO_ID link or a watch URL for the live stream. YouTube serves the current thumbnail of the stream just like a normal video. If the stream has not started yet, some sizes may not be available, and the tool will show you which ones are.

Is it legal to use someone else's thumbnail?

The tool is neutral. How you use the image is what matters. Thumbnails are copyrighted by the channel that created them. Fair uses include analysis, commentary, criticism, reporting and education. Re-publishing a thumbnail as your own, or using it in ads or commercial products without permission, is copyright infringement. When in doubt, ask the creator or credit them clearly and link back to the source video.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to install, no account to create, no browser extension, no app. It works on Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop, iPhone and Android.

Does the tool store my video history?

Only the last six video IDs you looked up are saved, in your browser's localStorage, on your own device. Nothing is sent to any server. You can clear them by clearing your browser data, or they cycle out automatically as you look up new videos.

Can I download all sizes at once?

Yes. Click Download all as ZIP and the tool bundles every available size into a single ZIP file named after the video ID. The ZIP contains the JPEG for each size that exists for that video.

Why is the download opening in a new tab instead of saving?

Some browsers or privacy extensions block cross-origin fetches to i.ytimg.com. When that happens, the tool falls back to opening the image URL in a new tab. Right-click (or long-press on mobile) and choose Save image as… to keep it.

Does it work offline?

The interface works offline after the first load, but the thumbnails come from YouTube's CDN, so you need an internet connection to fetch the actual images. Recent video IDs still appear as thumbnails if their images are in your browser cache.

Nothing is tracked, nothing is stored

The video ID you paste never leaves your browser. Thumbnails are fetched directly from YouTube's public CDN (i.ytimg.com), not from our servers. Your recent-video list is kept in your browser's localStorage and can be cleared at any time by clearing site data. See why ToolDeck is different.
