How this compares to other denoisers

Most online denoisers upload your audio to a server and add a watermark on the free tier. This one runs locally in your browser.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your audio

Choose a file or drag one onto the page. MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC and WebM are supported. The file stays in your browser.

  2. 2

Pick a preset or tune it

Light, Medium or Strong gets you a good result in one click. Or set noise reduction and noise floor yourself for full control.

  3. 3

    Download the cleaned MP3

Click Reduce noise. ffmpeg runs locally in WebAssembly. When it finishes, play the result, then download the MP3.

Everything you get for free

  • One-click noise reduction

Pick Light, Medium or Strong and click Reduce noise. The FFT denoiser in FFmpeg removes hiss, hum, fan noise and AC drone in a single pass.

  • Custom strength controls

Set noise reduction and noise floor by hand. Higher reduction removes more noise but can soften quiet voice detail. Lower is gentler and safer.

  • Many input formats

MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC and WebM. Whatever your recorder, phone or editor produced, ffmpeg can read it.

  • MP3 output at 192 kbps

The cleaned file is encoded as a 192 kbps MP3, which is fine for voice recordings, podcasts and interviews and plays everywhere.

  • A/B compare with previews

Play the original and the cleaned version side by side in the tool before you download. Confirm the noise is gone and the voice is still there.

  • Live progress and stage

See the ffmpeg log line and a progress bar while it works. First run downloads the engine once and caches it for later files.

  • No watermark, no tag

The MP3 has no embedded ToolDeck tag or audio watermark. The file is clean and yours to publish or share as you like.

  • Nothing leaves your device

The audio never touches a server. FFmpeg runs in WebAssembly inside your tab. Your recording, your voice and your file stay on your computer.

What people use it for

  • Podcast cleanup

Remove room tone, hiss and fan noise from a podcast episode before you publish it. Cleaner audio is more pleasant to listen to for the whole episode.

  • Voice memos and interviews

Rescue a phone recording made in a noisy room. Background hum and street noise drop, voice stays in the mix.

  • Video voice-overs

Clean a voice track before you drop it into a video editor. Removing hiss early avoids stacking more noise later in the pipeline.

  • Online lessons and lectures

Clean up recorded lectures and tutorials recorded at home. Air conditioning and computer fans disappear without needing an audio engineer.

  • Field recordings

Reduce steady ambient noise from outdoor recordings. Wind, traffic and air conditioning are heavily attenuated while the intended sound remains.

  • Music demos

A quick denoise pass on rough demos before sending them to collaborators. Not a replacement for a full mix, but a cleaner starting point.

Questions people ask

What is an audio noise reducer?

An audio noise reducer is a tool that removes unwanted background sounds from a recording. It works by analyzing the audio frequencies and suppressing the steady noise (like hiss, hum, or fan noise) while preserving the main audio (like human speech or music).

Is my audio uploaded to a server?

No. The denoiser runs entirely in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file is read from disk, processed in memory and re-saved to disk. No part of the audio, no part of the filename and no part of the waveform is sent anywhere.

What kind of noise does this remove?

Steady background noise: hiss, hum, air conditioning, computer fans, electrical buzz, tape hiss and traffic rumble. It is less effective on intermittent sounds like a single cough, a door slam or a dog bark, because those do not look like steady noise to the FFT algorithm.

Which input formats are supported?

MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus, FLAC and WebM. If your file is in a less common format, convert it to WAV or MP3 first and then run it through this tool.

What format is the output?

MP3 at 192 kbps. That is fine for voice and podcast content and plays in every browser, phone and player. If you need lossless output, this tool does not offer it yet.

Why does the first run take a while?

The first time you process a file, the tool downloads the ffmpeg engine (around 25 MB of WebAssembly). After that it is cached by your browser and subsequent runs start immediately. If you have already used other tools on ToolDeck that use ffmpeg, the cache is shared.

Does it remove voice, not just noise?

No. The denoiser is tuned to suppress steady noise, not to isolate or remove voices. If you turn up Noise reduction too far on a quiet voice recording, the voice itself can start to sound hollow or metallic. Stick to Medium or Light unless you really need more.

Can it remove music from a video?

Not directly. This tool targets background noise, not music separation. If you need to strip music from a video, use a dedicated stem separation tool.

Does it change the pitch or tempo?

No. The audio is not time-stretched, pitch-shifted or otherwise retimed. The output has the same duration and the same pitch as the input.

Can I hear the result before downloading?

Yes. Play the original with the built-in player, then play the cleaned file. Both players are in the tool. If the result is not good enough, adjust the preset and try again.

Does it work on mobile?

The tool works in modern mobile browsers but processing is much slower than on desktop. Files under a few minutes work. For longer files or faster turnaround, use a laptop or desktop.

What is "noise floor"?

Noise floor is the level, in decibels, below which audio is treated as noise. Anything quieter is suppressed. A higher value (closer to 0) is more aggressive. The presets set sensible values: -50 dB for light, -40 dB for medium, -30 dB for strong.

What is "noise reduction"?

Noise reduction is how much attenuation is applied to the identified noise, in decibels. Higher values remove more noise but risk making the voice sound thin. The presets use 6, 12 and 20 dB.

Is there a file size limit?

No hard limit, but processing time scales with file length. A 5-minute recording is usually under a minute on a modern laptop. Hour-long files can take several minutes and use a lot of memory, so split them first if you can.

Can I use the output commercially?

Yes. There are no restrictions on the cleaned file. Whatever rights you hold over the original recording, you keep over the result. No ToolDeck branding, no watermark, no attribution required.

Does it add metadata or a ToolDeck tag?

No. The output MP3 has no embedded ToolDeck tag, no ID3 comment added by us and no audible watermark. The file is exactly what the encoder produced from your input.

Why does the output sound worse than the input?

If you set Noise reduction or Noise floor too aggressive, the tool starts removing the voice as well as the noise, which makes it sound hollow. Reset to a lighter preset and try again. For very quiet voice recordings, use Light and expect only modest cleanup.

Your audio never leaves your device

There is no upload step and no server-side handling. FFmpeg is compiled to WebAssembly and runs inside your browser tab, so your recording is read from local disk, processed in memory and saved back to local disk. Nothing about the file, its name or its contents reaches any server, including ours. Open the browser network tab while using the tool and confirm there are no outbound requests carrying your audio. Read how we keep it private.
