Why this is the best way to sign a PDF

Most online signers upload your contract to a server, cap you at a few documents per month, and slap a watermark on the output. This one does not.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your PDF

Drag and drop or click to choose. The PDF is opened straight from local memory. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.

  2. 2

    Draw or type your signature

Draw with a mouse, finger or stylus, or type your name for a handwritten-style signature. Resize it with the slider before placing.

  3. 3

    Place and download

Click on the page to drop your signature exactly where it belongs. Sign every page you need, then download the signed PDF.

Everything you get for free

  • Draw your real signature

Use a mouse, trackpad, finger or stylus to draw your signature. It appears on a smooth canvas with pressure-friendly strokes, the same feel as signing on paper.

  • Or type it in a handwriting font

Prefer typing? Enter your name and the tool renders it in an italic serif font that looks like a natural signature. Useful if you do not have a stylus and cannot draw with a mouse.

  • Place it exactly where you want

Toggle "place" and click anywhere on the page. The signature appears centred on your click and is clamped inside the page edges, so it never lands off the paper.

  • Multi-page signing

Move between pages with the pager, place a signature on each one you need. Perfect for initialling every page of a contract or signing multiple forms in one PDF.

  • Adjustable signature size

A slider controls the size of the signature before you place it. Small for initials, medium for a signature line, larger for a cover page.

  • Live page preview

The actual PDF page renders in the browser so you sign against the real document, not a guess. See the signature line, the label and the blank box, and place accordingly.

  • No watermark, ever

The signed PDF is the original document with your signature added. No "signed with ToolDeck" stamp, no reduced resolution, no extra page. What you signed is what you get.

  • Works on phone and desktop

The tool uses touch events on mobile and mouse events on desktop. Sign on your phone with a finger, or on a laptop with a trackpad. Both work.

What people use it for

  • Sign a rental agreement

Landlords and tenants increasingly share leases as PDFs. Sign, save, and email the signed copy back in under a minute, with no printing and no scanner.

  • Initial every page of a contract

Use the pager to move through pages and drop a small initials mark on each one. Faster than scrolling through a print-out and initialling each sheet.

  • Fill and sign a form

School permission slips, HR forms, medical consent forms: sign the PDF directly without installing an app or creating an account.

  • Approve a purchase order

Freelancers and small businesses sign quotes, POs and invoices as PDFs. The original document is preserved, and only your signature is added.

  • Sign on a phone while travelling

No laptop, no printer, no problem. Open the tool on your phone, drop the PDF, sign with your finger, and send it on. Works offline after the first load.

  • Add a second signature to a joint document

Some documents need two signatories. Sign the PDF, then send it to the co-signer who opens it here and adds their own signature on the second line.

Questions people ask

How do I sign a PDF for free?

Drop your PDF into the tool above, draw or type your signature, click on the page where you want it, then download the signed file. The whole process runs in your browser. No sign-up, no email, no watermark, and no file leaves your device.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is opened and signed entirely in your browser using a local copy of the pdf.js engine and pdf-lib. There is no server call, no upload, no storage. If you open your browser dev-tools Network tab while signing, you will not see the file being sent anywhere.

Is an electronic signature legally binding?

In most countries, yes. That holds for the vast majority of everyday documents. In the US, the ESIGN Act (2000) and state UETA laws give electronic signatures the same legal effect as handwritten ones. In the EU, eIDAS governs the tiers of electronic signature. Some documents (wills, certain court filings, some immigration forms) may require a wet signature or a qualified/advanced e-signature. Check the rules for your document type and jurisdiction.

What is the difference between an electronic signature and a digital signature?

An electronic signature (what this tool creates) is any electronic mark that shows intent to sign: a drawn signature, a typed name, a click. A digital signature is a cryptographic signature that uses a certificate to prove identity and detect tampering, like what DocuSign, Adobe Sign or a qualified trust service provider produce. Both are valid in many contexts; a digital signature carries more proof of authenticity.

Can I sign on my phone?

Yes. The signature canvas accepts touch events, so you draw with your finger or a stylus. The page preview renders responsively. Very large PDFs may be slower to open on older phones, and a desktop browser handles them faster.

Can I place more than one signature?

Yes. Place a signature, move to another page with the pager, and place another. Each placement is remembered and drawn onto the PDF when you click Apply. You can remove any placement from the list on the right before applying.

Does it work on password-protected PDFs?

PDFs that are encrypted but open without asking for a password are handled automatically. If the PDF requires a password to open, unlock it first with a PDF unlocker, then bring the unlocked file here to sign.

What size is the signature?

The slider controls the size before you place. A small size (around 60-100 px) is good for initials. Medium (around 140 px) is right for a standard signature line. Larger (200-280 px) suits a cover page or a contract with a big signature block. Once placed, the signature keeps the size you set. Remove it and place it again to change the size.

Will the signature look like my real one?

If you draw with a stylus or finger on a touch screen, the drawn signature matches your natural hand closely. If you draw with a mouse or trackpad, it will look shakier. In that case, using the typed option often looks cleaner and more professional.

Does the tool add a watermark or "signed with" mark?

No. The signed PDF is the original document with your signature drawn on top. There is no watermark, no logo, no extra page, no footer stamp, and no change to image quality or text. What you signed is what you get.

Is it really free, and is there a limit?

Yes, completely free. No sign-up, no email, no daily limit, no file size cap. The only real limit is your device's memory: a 200 MB PDF with hundreds of pages will work on a modern laptop but may struggle on an older phone.

Can I edit my signature after placing it?

Not directly. You remove it from the Placed list and place a new one. The Placed panel on the right shows every signature you have placed with its page number. Click the X to remove a placement, then place a new one with the slider set to a different size.

Your PDF never leaves your device

The PDF is opened, previewed and signed entirely in your browser using a local copy of the pdf.js and pdf-lib engines. Your signature data is held in memory only until you download the signed PDF, then freed. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, nothing is logged. See why ToolDeck is different.
