Questions people ask
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using pdfjs and pdf-lib. Your files never leave your device — we cannot see them even if we wanted to.
Is it really 100% secure?
Yes. There is no upload step, no server processing, no temporary storage. Open your browser network tab while you compress — you will not see your PDF being sent anywhere.
How much smaller will my PDF get?
It depends on the source. Image-heavy PDFs (scans, photos) typically shrink by 50-80%. Text-only PDFs from Word or LaTeX shrink less — maybe 20-40% — because their original encoding is already efficient.
Does compression keep text selectable?
Not in this version. We re-render each page as a compressed image, so text becomes pictures. This is the trade-off for browser-side compression — a server tool could preserve text. If you need selectable text, use our other tools, or keep the original.
What quality settings should I use?
Recommended (60% quality, 120dpi) works for most documents. Pick Light for scans that need to stay legible. Pick Strong only if you must hit a specific size — text may become slightly soft.
Is there a file size limit?
No. iLovePDF caps free users at 5MB. We impose no limit — the practical limit is your device memory.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Yes, this is where compression is most effective. A 20MB scanned document can often compress to 3-5MB with no visible quality loss.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android both work. No app to install.
Do I need internet after the page loads?
No. Once the page has cached the libraries, you can switch off WiFi and compress PDFs locally.
Can I compress multiple PDFs at once?
Not in this version — one PDF at a time. Batch mode is on our roadmap.
Will my bookmarks and forms survive?
No. Like all raster-based compressors, bookmarks, fillable form fields and interactive annotations are stripped. Static text and images are preserved as visual content.
Why is this free?
Because your device does the work, so it costs us nothing to run. We may show ads to cover hosting, but they never lock the tool.
100% secure — nothing stored
