Quick answer

ToolDeck CSS Grid and Flexbox Generator is a free visual builder. Choose Grid or Flexbox, adjust columns, rows, gaps, alignment and flow while a live preview updates, then click Copy CSS. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up, and does not upload your layout.

  • Price: free, no account needed
  • Modes: CSS Grid and Flexbox in one tool
  • Grid size: 1 to 12 columns and rows, using repeat() and minmax(0, 1fr)
  • Preview: six sample children, updated live
  • Output: plain CSS for the container, with optional .item styles
  • Privacy: runs in your browser, layout is not uploaded
  • Not included: grid-template-areas, subgrid, container queries

Once your layout is ready, you can tidy the markup with the HTML Minifier, write docs with Markdown to HTML, or compare two versions of your CSS with the Diff Checker.

How to build a CSS Grid or Flexbox layout

  1. 1

    Pick Grid or Flexbox

Click the mode toggle. Grid gives you columns, rows, gaps and alignment. Flexbox gives you direction, wrap, gaps and alignment.

  2. 2

    Adjust the controls

Drag sliders and pick values. The preview updates live, so you see how the layout behaves with six sample children.

  3. 3

    Copy the CSS

Click Copy CSS to send the container rule (and optional .item styles) to your clipboard. Paste it into your project and extend as needed.

What the generator includes

  • Grid and Flexbox in one place

Toggle between CSS Grid and Flexbox. The controls for both layout modes are on one screen, so you do not need separate tools.

  • Live visual preview

Every slider and dropdown updates the preview instantly. See the effect on six sample children before you copy the CSS.

  • Adjustable columns and rows

From 1 to 12 columns and rows. The grid template uses minmax(0, 1fr) so long content shrinks instead of overflowing.

  • Separate column and row gaps

Control horizontal and vertical spacing independently. Useful for dense grids and card layouts.

  • Full alignment control

    justify-items, align-items and justify-content for Grid. justify-content, align-items and align-content for Flexbox.

  • Grid auto-flow options

Choose row, column or dense packing. Dense flow backfills holes when items have different spans, useful for magazine-style layouts.

  • Clean CSS output

Copy the CSS for the container, plus optional .item styles. No vendor prefixes, no utility classes, no framework wrappers.

  • Your layout stays on your device

The generator is plain JavaScript in your tab. Your layout choices and CSS are not sent to a server.

What people use it for

  • Prototype a layout fast

Sketch a card grid, dashboard or gallery layout in the preview, then copy the CSS into your project instead of editing stylesheets blind.

  • Learn Grid and Flexbox

Move sliders and watch what changes. A quick way to build a feel for justify-content, align-items and grid-auto-flow.

  • Debug a broken layout

Reproduce your container settings and see whether the problem is the container, the children, or a conflicting rule elsewhere.

  • Compare Grid vs Flexbox

Switch modes with the same child count and see how each layout engine handles the same content. Useful when deciding which to use.

  • Teach a class or workshop

Share your screen, adjust the controls and talk through each property. Students see the effect immediately.

  • Generate starter CSS

Copy a clean container rule into a new component as a starting point, then extend it in your codebase.

What works well and what to keep in mind

A quick, honest look at where this generator helps and where you will need to edit the CSS by hand.

Works well for

  • Building column and row layouts for cards, galleries and dashboards
  • Trying justify-content, align-items and align-content values side by side
  • Seeing how grid-auto-flow: dense changes item placement
  • Getting a clean starting rule you can paste into any project
  • Learning how Grid and Flexbox differ using the same six items

Keep in mind

  • Track sizes are even (repeat with minmax(0, 1fr)). For fixed or mixed sizes, edit grid-template-columns after copying.
  • grid-template-areas, subgrid and container queries are not part of this tool.
  • The preview always shows six sample children. Your real markup may have a different number.
  • Layouts are not saved. Refreshing the page resets the controls, so copy your CSS first.
  • grid-auto-flow: dense can change visual order compared with DOM order. Check keyboard tab order before you ship it.

How this compares to other layout generators

Some CSS generators split Grid and Flexbox into separate tools, and some ask for an account. This one keeps both modes together and runs locally, but it also leaves out a few advanced features.

Questions people ask

Is the CSS Grid and Flexbox generator free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no account, no watermark and no usage limit. The tool is a single page that runs in your browser.

Do I need to know CSS to use this?

No. You can drag sliders and see the layout change without knowing the properties. If you do know CSS, the property names are shown as labels so you can map each control to its real CSS equivalent.

What is the difference between CSS Grid and Flexbox?

Grid is two-dimensional: you define columns and rows and place items into them. Flexbox is one-dimensional: items flow along a single axis (row or column) and can wrap onto new lines. Grid suits page layouts and dashboards. Flexbox suits navigation bars, toolbars and single-axis alignment.

When should I use Grid and when should I use Flexbox?

Use Grid when you care about both rows and columns at once, such as a card gallery or dashboard. Use Flexbox when items sit in one line and you mainly want to align or distribute them, such as a nav bar or button group. Many real pages use both. Switch modes in the tool with the same six items to see the difference.

How do I center items with Flexbox?

Set the container to display: flex, then use justify-content: center for the main axis and align-items: center for the cross axis. In this tool, pick Flexbox, set both to center, and watch the preview.

How do I make a responsive card grid?

This generator outputs a fixed number of columns. For a responsive grid, copy the CSS and change grid-template-columns to something like repeat(auto-fit, minmax(220px, 1fr)) so columns adjust to the available width. Adjust the 220px value to suit your card size.

Does the tool support grid-template-areas?

No. This version focuses on column and row counts using repeat() and minmax(). If you need named areas, copy the CSS and add grid-template-areas by hand.

Can I use fr, px, rem or auto for column sizes?

The generated CSS uses repeat(N, minmax(0, 1fr)), which shares available space evenly. For custom track sizes, copy the CSS and edit the grid-template-columns value in your code.

What does minmax(0, 1fr) do?

It lets each column shrink below its content width when the container is narrow. With a plain 1fr, a column holding wide content (a long word, an image or a code block) can refuse to shrink and cause horizontal overflow. Using 0 as the minimum avoids that in many cases.

Why does justify-content: space-between do nothing in Flexbox?

It only spreads items when there is free space on the main axis. If the items already fill the container, or there is only one item, there is nothing to space out, so you will see no change.

What does grid-auto-flow: dense do?

Dense packing lets later items backfill gaps left by earlier, larger items. It is useful for magazine-style layouts, but it can make the visual order differ from DOM order, which affects keyboard tab order and screen readers. Check the result before using it.

Can I add more than six preview items?

The preview uses six sample children so the layout is easy to read. The CSS output applies to the container, so it works with any number of items in your own markup.

Does the tool support grid-template-rows?

Yes. When rows is 1, no explicit grid-template-rows is emitted and rows flow implicitly. When rows is greater than 1, the tool emits repeat(N, minmax(0, 1fr)) for rows.

Does the CSS include vendor prefixes?

No. Grid and Flexbox are unprefixed in all current major browsers. If you must support very old browsers such as IE 10 or 11, you would need to add prefixes and fallbacks yourself.

Can I save my layout?

No. Refreshing the page resets the controls to their defaults. To keep a layout, copy the CSS into your project or a scratch file.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The controls stack vertically on narrow screens and the preview stays usable. Building layouts on a phone is fiddly, so a desktop or tablet gives a better experience.

Can I use the output in commercial projects?

The output is a handful of standard CSS properties, and you are free to use it in personal, client or commercial projects.

Does it support container queries or subgrid?

No. The generator covers the classic Grid and Flexbox container properties. Container queries, subgrid, grid-template-areas and masonry are not included.
