How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your PDF

Drag or click to choose. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.

  2. 2

Type the password you know. It is used locally and never sent anywhere.

  3. 3

    Download unlocked PDF

Click Unlock and download. No watermark, no restrictions on the output.

Everything you get for free

  • Password never leaves your device

You type the password in your browser. It is used locally to decrypt the PDF and is never sent to any server, not even temporarily.

  • 100% secure, nothing uploaded

The PDF is decrypted and re-saved entirely in your browser. Your contracts, statements and private documents never touch a server.

  • Removes open-password protection

Works with PDFs that require a password to open. Enter the correct password once, and we output an unencrypted copy.

  • No restrictions on output

The unlocked PDF can be opened by anyone, edited in any PDF editor, and shared without a password.

  • No sign-up, no email, no watermark

Open, drop the PDF, enter the password, download. No account, no confirmation email, no watermark on the output.

  • Quality slider

Control the render quality from 1.2x to 3x. Higher quality means sharper text at a slightly larger file size.

What people use it for

  • You forgot the password

You created the PDF years ago and set a password you no longer remember, but you still have it written somewhere.

  • Old tax documents

Old bank statements or tax filings you own often come password-protected. Unlock them for archiving.

  • Your own resumes

Resume PDFs you sent with a password. Unlock the copy you kept to reuse the layout.

  • Before editing

Some PDF editors cannot open password-protected files. Unlock first, then edit freely.

  • For printing

Print shops and copy centers need unencrypted PDFs. Unlock before sending the file.

  • For merging and combining

Our Merge PDF tool needs unencrypted inputs. Unlock each file, then combine them.

Questions people ask

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. The password is used in your browser to decrypt the PDF via pdfjs. It is never sent to any server, not even over an encrypted connection. Open your browser network tab while you use the tool to verify.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Your PDF and password both stay on your device.

Can you unlock a PDF I do not have the password for?

No. This tool only removes the password if you already know it. It is not a password cracker. If you own a PDF but lost the password, contact the issuer or use a dedicated recovery service.

Is this legal?

Yes, if the PDF is yours or you have permission to modify it. Removing protection from documents you do not own may violate copyright or terms of service. Use responsibly.

Does the output keep text selectable?

No. Browser-based decryption re-renders each page as an image, so text becomes non-selectable. This is the same trade-off every browser-based unlocker makes. For text-editable output, use our PDF to Word tool after unlocking.

Will links and forms survive?

No. Pages become images, so interactive elements (links, form fields, checkboxes) are not preserved.

What if the password is wrong?

The tool will tell you and ask again. You can retry as many times as needed.

Is there a file size limit?

No. iLovePDF caps free users at 5MB. We impose no limit. The practical limit is your device memory.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android both work. No app needed.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the page has cached the libraries, you can switch off WiFi and unlock PDFs locally.

Does it remove print/copy restrictions?

We output a completely new, unencrypted PDF with no restrictions. But the output is raster, so text is not selectable. The copy restriction no longer applies visually.

Can I unlock multiple PDFs at once?

Not in this version. One PDF at a time. Batch mode is on our roadmap.

Your password is never sent anywhere

Your PDF and password are handled entirely in your browser. There is no upload step, no temporary server-side storage, no database, no retention. To verify: open your browser developer tools, go to the Network tab, then unlock a PDF. You will not see your PDF or your password being sent anywhere. See why ToolDeck is different.
