How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your PDF

Choose a file or drag one onto the page. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.

  2. 2

    Choose what to flatten

Pick Form fields only to keep text selectable, or Flatten everything to bake annotations, signatures and layers into fixed pages.

  3. 3

    Flatten and download

Click Flatten and download. Your new PDF is built on your device and saved right away. No watermark.

Everything you get for free

  • Two flatten modes

Flatten only the fillable form fields and keep the text selectable, or flatten everything so every page becomes a fixed image.

  • Locks form fields

Turn filled-in fields into permanent page content so nobody can change the answers, and every viewer shows the same thing.

  • Bakes in annotations and signatures

Comments, stamps, highlights and drawn signatures become part of the page when you choose Flatten everything.

  • Quality control

Pick Standard, High or Print (150, 200 or 300 DPI) to balance file size and sharpness when flattening to images.

  • Nothing uploaded, ever

Flattening happens in your browser using PDF.js and pdf-lib. Your contracts and forms never touch a server.

  • No sign-up, no watermark

Open, choose a mode, flatten, download. No account, no email and no ToolDeck branding on the result.

What people use it for

  • Send a completed form

Fill in a fillable PDF, then flatten the fields so the answers cannot be edited or lost when the form is opened elsewhere.

  • Finalise a signed contract

Bake a drawn signature and stamps into the page so the signed copy looks identical in every viewer.

  • Fix a PDF that prints wrong

Annotations and form fields sometimes disappear or shift when printing. A flattened PDF prints exactly as it looks on screen.

  • Remove hidden data

Flattening everything rebuilds the PDF from page images, so comments, form data, hidden layers and scripts are not carried over.

  • Upload to a strict portal

Some application portals reject PDFs with form fields or annotations. A flattened file avoids those errors.

  • Archive a final version

Keep a fixed, uneditable copy of a document after review comments and markup are finished.

Questions people ask

What does it mean to flatten a PDF?

Flattening merges interactive and layered content into the page itself. Form fields, comments, stamps and signatures stop being separate objects that can be edited and become fixed page content that looks the same everywhere.

Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?

No. Flattening runs entirely in your browser. PDF.js renders the pages and pdf-lib builds the new file on your device. Your document never leaves your computer or phone. Open the browser network tab while flattening to confirm no request carries your file.

What is the difference between the two modes?

Form fields only uses pdf-lib to turn fillable fields into fixed text. The text stays selectable and the file stays small. Flatten everything renders every page, including annotations, comments, signatures and form values, and rebuilds the PDF from images. It is the most thorough option, but text is no longer selectable.

Will I still be able to select and copy text?

With Form fields only, yes. With Flatten everything, no, because each page becomes an image. If you need searchable text afterwards, run the result through our OCR PDF tool.

Will flattening make my file bigger?

Form fields only usually changes the size very little. Flatten everything can make the file larger or smaller depending on the content, because pages are stored as images. Choose Standard quality for smaller files and Print quality when sharpness matters.

Does it flatten comments and highlights?

Flatten everything does: comments, stamps, highlights and signatures are drawn into the page image. Form fields only flattens fillable form fields and leaves other annotations as they are.

Does flattening make a PDF impossible to edit?

It makes it much harder. Flattened content can no longer be changed as form fields or annotations. A page that is now an image cannot be edited as text, although someone could still redraw over it with an editor or run OCR. Flattening is not a security feature. To restrict opening, use our Protect PDF tool.

Is flattening the same as redaction?

Not exactly. Flatten everything does rebuild each page from an image, so hidden text, layers and form data are not carried over. But it keeps everything that is visible on the page. To black out specific content, use the Redact tool in our PDF Editor first, then flatten.

Can I flatten a password-protected PDF?

Not yet. If the PDF needs a password to open, the tool cannot read it. Remove the password first with our Unlock PDF tool, then flatten the result.

Why does my PDF say there are no form fields?

Some PDFs only look like forms. They are flat pages with lines and boxes and no real fillable fields. There is nothing to flatten in that case, so use Flatten everything if you want to bake in other content, or the PDF Editor to add text over the form.

How large a PDF can I flatten?

The limit is your device memory. Form fields only handles large files easily. Flatten everything renders every page, so documents with hundreds of pages take longer, especially on phones. Split the PDF first if it is very large.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in modern mobile browsers. Flattening a long document to images is slow on a phone, so a laptop is better for big files.

Your PDFs never leave your device

There is no upload step and no server-side document handling. The PDF is opened, rendered and rebuilt entirely in your browser using PDF.js and pdf-lib. Open the browser network tab while flattening and confirm there are no outbound requests carrying file data. Read how we keep it private.
