How this compares to other PDF page numberers

Acrobat and most online PDF tools upload your file to a server to add numbers. This one adds them locally in your browser. Same output, no upload.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your PDF

Choose a file or drag one onto the page. The PDF is read in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2

    Choose position and format

Pick where the numbers go, what they look like, the starting number, size, margin and color.

  3. 3

    Download the numbered PDF

Click Add page numbers to build the new file, then download it. Your original PDF is untouched.

Everything you get for free

  • Six page number positions

Place numbers at bottom center, bottom right, bottom left, top center, top right or top left of every page.

  • Four number formats

Use plain numbers (1, 2, 3), Page 1, 1 of N, or Page 1 of N. Pick the one that fits the document.

  • Custom starting number

Continue from a previous document or start at any number. Useful when combining files into one series.

  • Skip the first page

Leave the cover page unnumbered and start numbering from page two. A common request for reports and books.

  • Adjustable font size

Set the number size from 8 to 24 points. Match the document typography or make numbers larger for print.

  • Adjustable margin

Control the distance from the page edge. Fine tune the offset so numbers clear headers, footers or bleed.

  • Black, gray or white numbers

Choose black for white pages, white for dark backgrounds, or gray for a subtle look that fits any layout.

  • Nothing leaves your device

The PDF is read and written locally in the browser. There is no server upload, no queue and no retention.

What people use it for

  • Legal contracts

Number contract pages so every signature, clause and appendix can be referenced by page in negotiation.

  • Court filings

Many courts require sequential page numbers on every page of a filing. Add them without reprinting.

  • Business reports

Give stakeholders a clean, referenced report with a numbered table of contents and appendices.

  • Ebooks and manuals

Number a PDF before sharing a draft. Skip the cover and start numbering on the first content page.

  • Academic papers

Submit a thesis or paper with consistent page numbers that match the printed and digital copies.

  • Combined PDFs

Set a custom starting number when a file continues from a previous PDF in the same series.

Questions people ask

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and processed entirely in your browser using pdf-lib. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored on a server.

What is the maximum file size?

There is no fixed limit. Practical limits depend on your device memory. PDFs up to around 100 MB work well in modern browsers on desktop.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. The tool adds a text layer on top of whatever is on the page, so scanned PDFs and image-based PDFs work the same as text PDFs.

Can I skip the first page?

Yes. Turn on Skip the first page and numbering starts from page two. The cover stays clean, and the rest of the document is numbered normally.

Can I start numbering from a specific number?

Yes. Set the starting number to any positive integer. This is useful when a PDF continues from another document.

Which fonts are used for the page numbers?

Standard Helvetica. It is embedded as a standard PDF font, so the numbers render consistently across viewers without bloating the file.

Does it work on password protected PDFs?

No. Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked first. Use the Unlock PDF tool to remove the password, then run the file through this tool.

Will it flatten or re-render the PDF?

No. The tool only adds a text object to each page. Existing text, images, links and forms remain intact and selectable.

Can I use Roman numerals?

Not yet. Numbering is numeric only for now. The four formats cover the common cases for reports, contracts and filings.

Can it number from the last page backwards?

No. Numbering is sequential from the first page you include. Reverse numbering is not supported.

Is there a page count limit?

No hard limit. A few hundred pages are fine on any modern laptop. Very large documents may be slower on phones.

Does it preserve hyperlinks and form fields?

Yes. The original page content is not modified. Hyperlinks, bookmarks and AcroForm fields survive the round trip through pdf-lib.

Your PDFs never leave your device

There is no upload step and no server-side document handling. The PDF is read and rebuilt entirely in your browser using pdf-lib. Your document and any numbers you add stay on your computer. Open the browser network tab while using the tool and confirm there are no outbound requests carrying file data. Read how we keep it private.
